Thimbleweed Park Podcast #68

by Ron Gilbert
Mar 31, 2018

A very special anniversary podcast where Gary, David and I realize we actually have nothing in common.

You can also subscribe to the Thimbleweed Park Podcast RSS feed if that's 'your thing'.

You can also get the podcast directly from iTunes.

I've missed these!

PiecesOfKate - Apr 02, 2018 at 11:13
Yay! Thanks for taking the time to do this :)

Arto - Apr 02, 2018 at 11:41
Oh man, this was great! I'm of the generation that was able to witness the development of Thimbleweed Park, and play it fresh out of the oven. My physical copy of the game is still in wraps, and I suspect it's worth thousands now.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Apr 02, 2018 at 12:16
thanks for this podcast!

@Ron Re: Talk About Things You F’d Up
Frame it as advice for people new to managing projects to give them a structure for being successful. You can explain how you came to some of your conclusions by giving the detail of what you learned from to reach that understanding. An area of the talk can be focused on recognizing issues and how to deal with them when they arise.

By the way, you guys are the best. Hope you keep making games together!

That's exactly what I didn't want to do. GDC is filled with survivor bias talks and I wanted to give the anti-survivor bias talk. I don't want to give anyone advice.  Never listen to advice from successful people, it's all survivor bias. Anyway, that wasn't the only reason I didn't give it. I'm really disappointed in GDC these days and didn't really want to be part of it, that was the main reason.

Nathan - Apr 02, 2018 at 17:45
So more of a “this is what went wrong and what I think caused it to go wrong” talk instead of a “do this because it happened to work for me but I can’t explain why” talk?   If GDC is full of the later it’s no wonder you’re not so keen on going.

Whatever your idea was/is I hope you turn it into a series of blog posts or podcasts that us non GDC attending people can enjoy.  That’s right Ron, I love it when you sacrifice hours of your personal life for my personal entertainment.  But seriously, it’s much appreciated when you do as your content is always insightful.

I think Thimbleweed park is one of the most atmosphere-heavy games Ive played for years. That is I feel I am transported to another universe. I love that. The music, art and sounds really did a lot.

And I really loved how we all could contribute to the game, in terms of book titles and such. Loved it.

The only think I didnt like, was that it took me way too long to figure out to use radioactive water to track foot prints. That was my monkey-wrench-moment.

Mattias Cedervall - Apr 02, 2018 at 14:48
Awesome! I will gladly listen to it hoping there's no spoilers...

Nor Treblig - Apr 02, 2018 at 20:02
Oh-oh. He really pictured them naked!

Boomer - Apr 02, 2018 at 21:16
Happy anniversary! I really enjoyed this game.

@Ron: What event in Norway are you going to?

Nor Treblig - Apr 02, 2018 at 21:56

Boomer - Apr 03, 2018 at 13:06
Thanks!

Seems like Al Lowe will be there too. It will surely be a fun event.

Joe - Apr 02, 2018 at 21:26
Hard to believe it's been a year.  I've played through the game twice and never had  to get a hint...  Except once, for that damn book.  (Damn you, ladder!)

Robert Green - Apr 03, 2018 at 06:37
I really hope it isn't 25 years before the next game from you guys.

Carlo Valenti - Apr 03, 2018 at 16:46
Great! Thank you! Happy birthday, TWP!

Brian Bagnall - Apr 05, 2018 at 11:54
It's a little surprising to hear the criticism of the DLC. I've always been a big supporter because I see it as an extension of expansion packs which have existed for a long time pre-digital downloads. DLC is the digital version of those, with the advantage that now you can have DLC for very small low-cost expansions to the game such as new costumes for your next playthrough, new missions, new game modes... In open world games like Fallout the DLC seems especially well suited.

With that said, now that you have the DLC mechanism coded into TWP, it would be great to see a mini-adventure released. There were some areas of TWP that seemed tragically underused in my opinion, such as the sewer areas and the wire frame world. It also seemed like there was a lot happening with the Uncle Chuck character that we never got to see. Maybe it would be relatively painless to give us a new adventure using a different set of characters and the existing art assets and game engine without voice-over (do it true old school). I bet every single backer would pay in the range of $5 to $10 for a new adventure lasting 3-5 hours.

It's been a long time to hear from you since last years release. I think everybody expected that you do new plans for a new Terrible Toybox Adventure Game, especially after the Germany Tour, but there is still no plan for a new game. I hope that Ron, Gary and David will do something after Thimbleweed. Great expectations.

Why would you cut out the donkeyyyyyy! nooooooooooo! I demand the donkey talk!
Now you have to come up with one!

Ijon - Apr 09, 2018 at 14:37
Congratulations. I don't understand why some diversity, critics or other peoples' opinions seem to upset you. I browsed through the steam reviews and it's mostly positive with only a few, sometimes also valid, critics. Nice A4 fadeout.

Mattias - Apr 10, 2018 at 08:18
Great to hear from you guys again! Do another game!

Giulio - Apr 20, 2018 at 18:02
Thank you guys. PLEASE make another game together. Whatever it is, I'll buy it, promised!
