Thimbleweed Park Trailer

by Ron Gilbert
Mar 03, 2016

Behold the latest trailer for the game to be henceforth known as Thimbleweed Park in all the lands.

And to celebrate it's release, our backer page is back up and in an astonishing feat of engineering and backroom deals and negotiation, you can now increase your pledge level.

I'll wait for you to recover from your fainting spell and get up off the floor...

That's right, increase your pledge level and get that reward you feared had slipped from your grasp forever. Or get brand new rewards like appearing in Ransome the Clown's Swear Jar.

- Ron

AMAZINGLY AWESOME !!!!

Keep it up guys, it looks amazing, I can't wait to put my hands on it.

Any possibility of a Raspberry Pi (2 or 3) port ?

Nor Treblig - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:29
Sure, doesn't RasPi run Linux and Windows?

Brian S - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:18
That is a good point, but it would need to be compiled for the ARM v6 CPU architecture to be used on Linux, and the Windows 10 embedded OS supported on the Pi requires a Universal Windows App, which I am sure they won't be targeting.  I realize your response is probably a joke, but it is an interesting question.

Nor Treblig - Mar 03, 2016 at 22:00
OK, Windows 10 embedded is out of question I guess.
Would it be hard to compile for ARM v6 since he is definitely targeting Linux already and also creating various mobile ports of his code? I'm sure he will at least try it if it's not too hard, though he maybe won't have devices for testing.

Brian S - Mar 03, 2016 at 22:10
I'd happily buy Ron a Raspberry Pi 3 for this effort. :)

Slash - Mar 04, 2016 at 05:18
Hi :)

While your question is valid, let me assume that there's no irony in it.

The windows version for Raspberry Pi is a IoT version compiled for Pi's processor architecture (arm) which is different from the "standard" architecture for PCs in general (x86, x64). So it's not possible to pick an app that runs on windows and run it in there. Also the market it (Windows on RPi) has it's inexistent and doesn't even justify the effort to do a port, also because at the current state of the art, one needs Visual Studio to install apps on Windows IoT, which is not something the regular user is very familiar with.

Regarding Linux, it has the same problem I described before, but with one major advantage, creating binaries for other architectures is almost as simple as just compiling them with the right compiler copy it to the platform and run it. Things get a bit tricky when one uses intrinsics which will basically require to rewrite pieces of code to use the right instruction set so it runs correctly in the target architecture.
There is always some memory alignment issues and other more technical caveats, but in principle the port should not be impossible, it just takes time.

Summarizing, getting the binaries for Linux (intel) and run them on the Raspberry Pi is just not possible, some work needs to be done, but the market is much more interesting for Raspberry Pi, specially because it's getting widely distributed and it's a small "box" that can be connected to the TV and played with a controller, since Ron is adding support for gamepads and console controllers, this would be a very suitable target to run on.

Sorry for this long explanation, I hope it was clear, but I thought it was needed :)

Regards,

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 01:01
Hello, er, Nuno slash Slash.

Thank you for your explanation! I now understand that Windows embedded is quite a different beast (and also no target audience). But Linux could be worth a try.

I guess one problem could be library dependencies (especially proprietary ones, for example a special sound library etc.). But since he is already targeting so many different platforms he needs to have solutions in this respect anyway.

Thorsten - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:39
Yay. SO looking forward. And looks even better than i anticipated!

Giulio - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:45
SPEECHLESS. THIS IS UTTELRY FANTASTIC I JUST CAN'T WAIT. THANK YOU.

Fil - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:47
Guys you are amazing ! I'm so looking forward to play it.

Stockfish Jensen - Mar 05, 2016 at 15:24
I am *so* going solo to the cabin this autumn – family can take care of themselves. “Looking forward” is such an understatement. :D

Natalija - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:47
OMG (and belive me, i never write OMG) !
This is awesome!

spiffy - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:49
I just DIED of EXCITEMENT

Daniel Wolf - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:49
Very cool!

Steffen - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:50
Great. Just great.

Rum Rogers - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:52
Spectacular!!!

Boomer - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:54
WOW! Looks and sounds fantastic.

Zombocast - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:55
I"m sorry the voice was distracting and did not feel like agent Ray.

But it does work for the young Delorez role or the Reporter from Nicle news.

Felt more like a dramatic reading of a dnd session, or a writer reading their own work.

Franklin - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:00
How can you say that when you know nothing about the character? It was perfect film-noir voice over.

DZ-Jay - Mar 04, 2016 at 07:09
::
Felt more like a dramatic reading of a dnd session, or a writer reading their own work.

That's exactly what I thought, it sounded like someone just reading a script in an overly dramatic way, like a character from a Telenovela reading a will.

     -dZ.

Mike - Mar 06, 2016 at 15:37
But isn't that the whole point? Even the song played sounds like a hommage (don't want to say Rip-Off *g*) from Twin Peeks.

Soren Ladegaard - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:55
WOW! I've been checking the blog several times per day waiting for the trailer to arrive.

I can't explain how much I'm looking forward to this game. It has be be the game of the year!

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:56
Very delicious trailer and her voice is good.

Marcelo Ellmann - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:56
Whoa, goosebumps.

Davanita - Mar 03, 2016 at 14:58
Yeahy, congratulations!

Adam - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:01
Honestly, the voiceover didn't really work for me. Kinda kills some aspect of the retro. But the game looks beautiful, can't wait!!

Soren Ladegaard - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:01
Would be cool if there was a version of the trailer with subtitles with the "classic font" known from the previous games.

I had to watch it twice to understand it all :-)

Joakim - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:05
Wow looks fantastic :) can't wait for it. The highlight of 2016 for sure. :) Looks like what an adventure should look like.

Liam - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:09
I agree, the voiceover didn't really work.  I liked the voice itself but the reading felt rushed and a little sloppy.  Plus the music threatened to drown it out at points.  That said, I'm still super excited by this trailer!

Leather-Jacket-Pusher - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:10
Please a PS4-Logo in the end. :)

Nor Treblig - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:27
Sorry, that place is reserved for C64 :p

FloWo1974 - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:16
Hm... I'm not really sold on her vooice....

Ron Gilbert - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:26
Well, I really like it. It fits Ray perfectly. I don't think I've ever worked on a game with voice where half the team didn't hate the voice actor, then two months later, they love it. As seen in these comments, voice just triggers something in people to start criticizing. Maybe it's that we hear the voice in our heads and no matter how good it is, it never matches and feels wrong. Give it time. If you've been imaging Ray as Scully, then you've been imaging her all wrong.

Biggus Dickus - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:39
That's exacly the reason why I will turn the voices off. I want the voices to form in my head. I never liked the voice of Guybrush for the same reason.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:46
Some people take medicine so the voices won't form in the head...

RC - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:53
I thought the voice actor for Guybrush Threepwood was really great. As if he was born to do it. :P

Farooq - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:28
Same here man. When i first heard it I felt exactly how i imagined hia voice to be in the first two games. I love it

Big Red Button - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:33
I'm not sure if I would have agreed with you, if Guybrush also had that voice acting in the original versions of Monkey Island 1 & 2 due to the differing appearance of Guybrush there. Anyway, I find the voice to be very suitable for Guybrush in the Special Editions and the sequels, so I agree with you on the whole.

Ema - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:44
Ok, you just put in words my exact thought. I couldn't have said that better (and more briefly).
It would be interesting to hear Ron's opinion, after all those characters were his creations, and at the time of inventing them I think he couldn't even imagine that they would have had their own voice, one day.

jfrisby - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:21
He was all wrong!  and the games he was in weren't canon!

Farooq - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:30
Exactly. I think she sounds great.

urielz - Mar 03, 2016 at 21:27
Agree. It's a matter of time. My first reaction was "oh NO NO NO". By the end of the third time I watched the trailer I already got used to the voice. It's undeniable that it's good quality voice acting, so it's a matter of time, longer for some than for others...

DZ-Jay - Mar 04, 2016 at 06:59
I came in to post the same:  The voice and its inflection does not really fit the dialog or noir mood you seem to want to convey.

I guess that if you really like it, then we'll have to deal with it; the same with your choice of changing the art styles from the nostalgic and simpler Maniac Mansion style to the highly elaborate "2000's trying to be retro" style.  It's kind of disappointing.

     -dZ.

longuist - Mar 04, 2016 at 07:22
If you imagine Ray as Scully in the german revoice, everything is fine. (She sounds like a serious chain smoker, just search YouTube if you cannot believe it)

Asterisk - Mar 04, 2016 at 21:55
Scully?  I was imagining a Swedish accent.

Michael Hoffmann - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:36
I had the same opinion after first watching the trailer. But after having watched it three times I began to like it. :-)

Alessander - Mar 03, 2016 at 20:09
I too didn't like her voice... the attitude, the pronunciation of the 's', whatever... It could be worse:

https://youtu.be/L5LwDCjVjfI?t=10m51s

Not sure if that could be worse, though.

P.S.0: Her pronunciation reminds me of Ron's :-P
P.S.1: I am aware that the first series of esses is probably a joke.
P.S.2: goto P.S.0;

Lennart - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:19
Everything in this trailer is perfect... Except that it's a bit spoilery. Now I'll be wary of the shadows in the dark, where as before me spirit was free.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:25
Ron, when will you show us how the interface to switch characters works?

Carlo Valenti - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:49
That's easy: to switch a character, you just have to hit a key on the keyboard. For instance : if you hit the C key, the C character appears on the screen. And so on.
Thank you for asking.

Nor Treblig - Mar 03, 2016 at 21:53
Nope, first: C is of course bound to 'Use' by default.
Second: everyone knows the characters are bound to F1, F2, F3 etc.!

You don't have Function-Keys on your keyboard or no keyboard at all?
Well, luckily we have this in-app purchase...

Carlo Valenti - Mar 04, 2016 at 18:18
I swear it: at least on my terminal,
if I hit J, the J character appears!
And if it is O key, the O character appears.
K? The K character is here!
E? The E character, my dear!

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 01:03
LOL, now you make me look like as if I am the one using an obscure keyboard layout.

Apparently I am too young, I wasn't raised with text parser adventure games :-)

Arto - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:11
That's a joke, right?

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 04, 2016 at 04:28
No, there should be an interface using the mouse to switch characters or similar when using a touch screen.

DZ-Jay - Mar 04, 2016 at 07:02
Har! Har!  I don't think many others got your joke.  :P

LOL!

Isaac - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:34
I can only say a word...

Coooooool!!!!! ;-p

Screwtape - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:44
I really like the voice, but as a native (Commonwealth) English speaker there were lines spoken so fast, or so quietly under the music, that I had to watch them a couple of times to understand them. Even then, I'm still not sure what this line was supposed to be: "The victim of the violence ??? known each other in the pursuit of dreams turned to nightmares."

The music and the atmosphere are awesome, though.

fov - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:46
"A victim of the violence we bring on each other in the pursuit of our dreams turned to nightmares."

RC - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:50
Awesome trailer. The game seems to shape into the thing I always hoped it would become.

SMB - Mar 03, 2016 at 15:55
Great choice of voice!

I don't normally care much about 'talkie' versions, and tend to play without voice - but this voice deepens the mood of the trailer so much that it adds a whole new colour to the game palette. No over-the-top acting, and no phoning-it-in either. Just right!

South Side Tony - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:03
Very cool.  The alley reminded me of the alley from Monkey Island, where sheriff Fester Shinetop has Guybrush cornered.  I was shocked to hear a voice, due to my association of old school Maniac Mansion graphics with simply text, but I liked it.  I can't wait to check out all the book titles from the library.  Remember people:  If you don't like the voices, I'm sure there's an option to turn it off.

Ricardo Marichal - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:04
Someone could subtitle the trailer here with text for those who do not understand spoken English ?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 04, 2016 at 10:55
I give it a shot (I'm italian, so I could have misunderstood something):
"Don't know if I was prepared for we found that night...
...and how much it would have changed us...
I arrived just as the sun began his slightest slumber over the dark night...
The time's taking desperate lonely in to be where I once was...
about [woodchuck would chuck wood]
blurred in pixelated cave, the death come too soon...

... and the rest, to the others! :-)

Ricardo Marichal - Mar 04, 2016 at 15:49
Thanks. I can help translating de Ransome "Mec, mec" into Spanish:
"Mic, mic".

:D

spiffy - Mar 05, 2016 at 11:23
"None of us were prepared for what we'd find that night. Or how much it would change us all. I arrived just as the sun began its slide into the slumber of a dark night. The town stank of a desperate longing to be what it once was. A body was found in the river. Bloated and pixelated from decay of a death come too soon. A victim of the violence we bring onto each other in the pursuit of our dreams turned to nightmares. A boyish looking and dangerously naive junior agent Reyes got there before me. I introduced myself as special agent Ray and immediately began to doubt if the buddy would suit my needs. The plan was to ditch Reyes and I hoped it would be that simple. I didn't want to think about what would happen if it got complex. I didn't need someone poking around. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong with this town. The town spoke in hushed and lowered voices of a dark magic I found hard to take seriously. Then a couple of pigeons told me about the signals and I knew... I knew that this was all part of something bigger. Something bigger than I planned for."

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 01:40
Thank you :-)
Even listening to this was a puzzle (to me), but I didn't want to give up!

Ricardo Marichal - Mar 06, 2016 at 04:05
Thanks !!!!!

Jesper - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:11
Looking cool, shaping up to be a real game :)

I have this thought that have been with me from the very start: That body under the bridge... is it laying in water? Shouldn't there be just SOME kind of motion in that water? There are all those little details with blinking lights that light up the background art all around town, and under that bridge there are even the fireflies, but that water is dead still.. It hurt my eyes :)

EdoBvd - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:12
"that doesn't seem to work" -- I can't wait to get that all over my screen (and speakers!), thousands of times, until I make everybody sick of it (including me).

Actually, it'be fun that after a few times of repeating it, the voice over just gives up and goes for a "hmmm" or something.
Of course that would not work very well for the immersion, but that'be fun. Or perhaps, just the character shaking her/his head, as if to say: "find me something more interesting to do".

Something completely unrelated: I can't remember if this was already asked, but the game doesn't seem to be suitable for ~5yrs kids?
My daughter really enjoyed Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, but I'm not sure if this one is not too scary and gruesome?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:23
If she weren't scared by maniac mansion, I think it will not be scared by Thimbleweed Park. It's all funny. It's not like "Alone in the dark"... that style is scary!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:24
Attempt # 2:
If she wasn't scared by Maniac Mansion, I think she won't scared by Thimbleweed Park. It's all funny. It's not like "Alone in the dark"... that style was scary!

Nor Treblig - Mar 03, 2016 at 21:55
Oh, now I wonder if he really meant Maniac Mansion since it IS more scary. Maybe he just meant DOTT, which is definitely suitable for children?

EdoBvd - Mar 04, 2016 at 13:50
not played DOTT with her yet
I'm waiting a bit so that she can enjoy the multi-dimensional story
MM and MI are relatively linear games (except perhaps when Guybrush falls from the cliff)

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 01:05
Makes sense. Also it's one of the best of its kind so it probably shouldn't be used to introduce someone to such games.

Regarding Thimbleweed Park: Due to stuff like music, sound effects, voice, lighting etc. it could be much more immersive than for instance Maniac Mansion. But I don't think it will be that scary. Also she will be older when the game comes out :-)

One question: Did you let her play the games on her own being more of an instructor or were you mainly to one in control?

EdoBvD - Mar 07, 2016 at 11:50
I have yet to find a game that gives me the same immersion as MM did at the time; that feeling that you could do anything and something would happen; the exploration of the possibilities...

No, I was the one in control, mainly because the mouse is too sensitive to use.
On the Talos Principle, she's so hooked, that she's trying nonetheless :-)

Nor Treblig - Mar 07, 2016 at 13:50
I also loved Zak, I could travel the whole world and do whatever I want! At least that's what it felt like.

You could also try it with a touchscreen. Modern games (e.g. Special Editions, Broken Age) should work out of the box, ScummVM will work with a patched SDL DLL.
It's really nice to point on the screen and Guybrush walks there! Point'n Walk!

David Fox - Mar 11, 2016 at 12:08
Thanks Nor! BTW, Zak can now be purchased through GOG for $5.95 US if someone wants to give it a go while waiting for Thimbleweed Park - http://www.gog.com/game/zak_mckracken_and_the_alien_mindbenders

Nor Treblig - Mar 11, 2016 at 15:42
Also you get two versions on GOG: EGA (v2) and FM-Towns!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:13
Definetily, flying to London to betatest it, it's worthy!!!
Guys, I laughed all time!! It's PERFECT! It's the game with all the particulars that made great all previuos adventure games, but with the effects of the machines of today.

Sorry, I'm so excited that I could have done many grammatical errors...
It's fantastic!!

Peter Stillman - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:14
The voice is just unreal - Now I know what I was missing all those years in MI and Indy. That"s excellent work guys. Voiceover makes such a difference.

Keep going - your are 23% there.

tomimt - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:15
Absolutely amazing. I really love the voice over. Who's the actor, her voice sounds familiar.

Big Red Button - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:17
Wow, I may have been expecting a great game, but this trailer is really promising in every sense! My pleasant anticipation has seemingly been justified!

I find the voice to be suitable.

Matt Hargett - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:22
You guys totally nailed the palette and special effects. Really looking forward to playing it on PS4, but also hopefully Vita!

peterszky - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:27
The best geek girl design won, YEAH :)

Brian S - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:28
Very nice.  Especially the "wait for it" moment after the gunshot/bullet hole, and of course the awesome unexpected post-trailer clip.

Brian S - Mar 03, 2016 at 22:46
The fountain at 0:47 is awesome.  So much good stuff here.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 03, 2016 at 23:09
That's Octavi. Other than the elevator, that's the first of his backgrounds we've shown.

David Fox - Mar 11, 2016 at 12:10
Yes, Octavi also did the sewers.

Steffen - Mar 05, 2016 at 17:42
Great art work indeed. But I dont catch the reference here. What is the original to this fountain??

Farooq - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:33
Woah woah woah. Im all praise. Dark yet humorous. I am un-containable right now!

Jon Karis - Mar 03, 2016 at 16:58
This was great! So happy!!!! :)

Milton Moura - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:12
Yeah! Can't wait for it!

Benjamin B. - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:17
Hello Ron!

There's a lot of talk about VR these days. Will Thimbleweed Park support the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive?

Roel - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:47
Now, what's the point of that?

Brian S - Mar 03, 2016 at 23:06

Matt - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:26
I hate it when corpses get pixelated. So much blockage to deal with.

Looks, and sounds, great!

Peter Campbell - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:40
I was scrolling through the homepage, then downloaded the trailer, watched it and was like "Wait, what?  This is the same exact trailer I saw several months ago!  What's so new about it????"  Then I realized I downloaded the wrong trailer lol.

Everything looks to be coming along great!

Carlo Valenti - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:43
Thank you for posting this trailer. It's nice.
I liked most the view of the town from the hill. Will the slow-zoom effect be anywhere in the game?

Bob790 - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:56
Seems decent enough.

Rod - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:58
shut up and take my money!!!
This looks so darn retro... insanely great, brought the memories right back.

I thought my original pledge was fair enough. After seeing this I believe I was wrong. Shall I say it again? TAKE MY MONEY.
I am so looking forward to this game.

Young Jack - Mar 03, 2016 at 17:58
My younger (and current) self is chomping at the bit to play this! Cannot wait.

Carl - Mar 03, 2016 at 18:09
Looks amazing. I can't wait!

Meuti - Mar 03, 2016 at 18:14
10/10 Thank you for sharing this.

Mario - Mar 03, 2016 at 18:41
@DEVS: oh... David isn't worthy to be mentioned at the end credits?  ok Ron and Gary started that campaign but David and Mark are 2 more epic guys ;-) - at least giv'em a hug.

David Fox - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:39
Thanks for the hug, Mario. Who needs credits when there are hugs!

Mario - Mar 04, 2016 at 16:19
i hug u twice.

Okona - Mar 06, 2016 at 07:49
I also missed you in the credits, David!

*Hug*

Brian Bagnall - Mar 09, 2016 at 15:30
This is definitely a Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick designed game (those two are also the Maniac Mansion designers).

David Fox is definitely worthy of the end credits, but I wouldn't consider it "his" game. I hope someday after this project completes David Fox and Matthew Kane will make a game of their own in the spirit of Zak McKracken. I would back that thing easily.

David Fox - Mar 11, 2016 at 12:12
Thanks Brian!

Brad - Mar 03, 2016 at 18:57
Lookin' pretty good.

Mikeeee - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:09
Underwhelmed.
3/10

Vinicius - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:09
Woohooo!

Morphez - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:13
Awesome! Can't wait..

Oregondanne - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:15
Couldn't have wished for a better birthday present... wow! I can see two four-letter words forming in the minds of games writers upon giving this gem a shot in the summer (nah, make that three - the third one being GOTY!)

Brian S - Mar 03, 2016 at 23:12
Happy Birthday!

Zombocast - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:33
Ron had mentioned that the game should be completely playable with whatever character we want, minus the time it takes to unlock them and a few character specific puzzles.

If Agent Ray just isnt for you there are many more to choose from. I personally look forward to hearing the rest of the voice acting cast!

Brian Ruff - Mar 03, 2016 at 22:59
I'm really loving the music! Would love to get Steve Kirk's take on working on the project maybe via a podcast or blog post? (or a 60-minute VH1 storytellers episode)

Sundance - Mar 04, 2016 at 02:17
There was a time when i bought games in boxes, nowadays i buy boxes with games in them.

I love these educational games. I have not even played Thimbleweed Park, but already learnd a lot about swear jars. But isn't it the money that comes into the jar? Where comes the name in the game?

Sundance - Mar 04, 2016 at 03:38
Now, that i read the description properly, i realize that i buy boxes without games in them. :)

Big Red Button - Mar 10, 2016 at 13:16
Indeed! :D

Furthermore, it's so long since I bought my last "cardboard box" game. I'd really like to actually find the TP box on a shelf in a store and buy it there!

Roman - Mar 04, 2016 at 03:21
Scully!!!, yes Mulder??
....ah damn..can't wait till I got it in my hand....wonderful work!

Big Red Button - Mar 04, 2016 at 03:41
What about asking Dominic Armato (the voice of Guybrush in the non-canonical MI games) for a voice acting cameo in TP - maybe for a character on Thimblecon dressed as a "wannabe" pirate?

Nor Treblig - Mar 04, 2016 at 03:54
I'd like that!

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 04, 2016 at 04:32
I got that idea as well and I hope they will do it!

Steffen - Mar 05, 2016 at 17:48
Nice idea!

Jammet - Mar 04, 2016 at 04:22
I *adore* the trailer! :] That's such amazing stuff!

Should I already have received my backer email, to increase my paypal pledge? I didn't get such an email yet.

Kroesi - Mar 04, 2016 at 04:30
Thank you for this!Thank you, thank you!

Bon Antza - Mar 04, 2016 at 04:56
The trailer is perfect, everything about it! Ooh, shivers.

I hope you haven't given away too many characters, backgrounds and story though. When I eventually get to play this future masterpiece I don't want to experience that unsuspenseful feeling all the time: "This one I saw in the trailer...and this room too...this story bit they mentioned twice in the podcast....oh hey this is the elevator from Octavi's video."

It's so hard being intensively attached to this project, but at the same time trying to maintain excitement and some shroud of mystery.

Michael Mai - Mar 04, 2016 at 05:30
Loving it! Ransome the asshole clown cracks me up. He is already my favourite character.

Arashi - Mar 04, 2016 at 05:47
Omg I love the voice actress! It's so cool for the character. The pixelart of the game is amazing, I can't wait to play it.

Marco - Mar 04, 2016 at 05:47
I'm sorry, I don't understand how does the swear jar work... Can someone please explain me it?

Andreas - Mar 04, 2016 at 05:48
Actually, I like the voice overs. I think the voice matches to the character.

Christof Jork - Mar 04, 2016 at 09:08
Great Trailer. Looks beautiful. I can not wait.
But: Please use a "De-esser" on the Voice.

Matthias Gansrigler - Mar 04, 2016 at 09:13
Wow, very cool. I absolutely love every aspect of that trailer. Can't wait for the game!

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 04, 2016 at 09:25
Ron, why did you raise the price of the soundtrack?! :-( I'm pretty sure it used to be $35. Do I have to be a Kickstarter backer to get into Ransome's swear jar? I didn't know about your Kickstarter campaign until it was too late. :-( I bought the game 2015 using PayPal.

Big Red Button - Mar 04, 2016 at 11:18
I assume that it's due to the fees for PledgeManager, who manage the upgrades. Ron mentioned several weeks ago, that it would cost a significant fee.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 04, 2016 at 13:59
I guess that could be the case. It's just very irritating because I missed the Kickstarter campaign and then I could buy the game here on this blog so I bought it immediately but the soundtrack option wasn't available until a while later and then I couldn't upgrade. :-( I still can't upgrade and I guess Ron owes me $5 if I can upgrade. It's not like I want to pirate the soundtrack...

Ron Gilbert - Mar 04, 2016 at 11:22
You don't have to be a KS backer to be in Ransome's Swear Jar.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 04, 2016 at 13:52
I can't find a link to Ransome's swear jar here: https://terribletoybox.pledgemanager.com/projects/thimbleweed-park/participate/

I don't have much money being unemployed so I'm not very eager to buy the soundtrack now that it's more expensive and it's not even possible to upgrade my PayPal pledge. :-(

DZ-Jay - Mar 05, 2016 at 06:26
It doesn't seem to work with my Desktop Safari.  Once I switched to Firefox it started working.  It's weird because I don't have problems with most any other site.

It's so nice to see such Hard Working People working hard. Long term economic plan. Hard working people.

Soren Ladegaard - Mar 04, 2016 at 12:15
I am thinking cult status and Thimbleweed park character merchandise etc. :-)

Séb - Mar 04, 2016 at 13:48
Why do I have to pay an extra 5$ during the survey ?

Ron Gilbert - Mar 04, 2016 at 13:51
You don't. please contact support@terribletoybox.com.

Séb - Mar 04, 2016 at 14:21
Thx for the quick answer, I will write them right away

Tobias R. - Mar 09, 2016 at 15:02
…and I saved 5 dollars (used to be 10 dollars for international shipping when I backed, now it’s 5), so I have now credit of  5 dollars. Should I also contact support?

Darkstorm - Mar 04, 2016 at 14:22
Now that David & Mark are onboard, is there any chance of them signing the poster as well?

zui - Mar 04, 2016 at 15:12
Nice trailer but ...

On a first and second view the voice acting doesn't click with the character yet.

Some graphics look kind of blocky whilst others look more detailed.

I still like the music (and the nose sound).

Jammet - Mar 04, 2016 at 15:26
I haven't received my Pledge-Upgrade email (yet). My buddy got his though. Should I just wait?

Mario - Mar 04, 2016 at 17:00
Did i read the poster correct? Stupendious Bros presents? Hard to encrypt.

AbuJafar - Mar 04, 2016 at 17:50
Thank you so much guys!!! You made my day! I just heard about Thimbleweed Park and I'm so f** excited ! I remember the days playing MI, MI 2 and Indy when I was 5. So looking forward ! Keep up the good work.

Greetings from Germany!

Kroesi - Mar 04, 2016 at 18:07
Am i allowed to pirate Monkey Island in future if i own the pirate award to play it again im Scummvm or does it only absolve for the past? ;-)
I can't wait to play TP. You made a dream come true. Please open source the engine some day so it can be ported to the c64 or amiga for the perfect atmosphere :-)

Paulup - Mar 04, 2016 at 20:48
Amazing! I can't wait to explore this world you guys have created, and I'm loving the new glimpses into the story and locations...

With the voice - I like the actual voice and I think it really fits the character and the vibe of the game, but I do think there are minor things that could be improved:

1. the reading does sound a bit hurried and unclear in places as others have mentioned... I think this is partly down to the voice actor not slowing down to enunciate properly in parts, but it's also because of...

2. the sound engineering of the voice and how it's mixed with the music. There are several things a sound engineer could do to improve it, like use a de-esser (as someone else mentioned already) to tame the sibilance, add compression to make the volume level of the vocal even throughout, and make EQ adjustments to both the voice and music, so that the voice isn't masked by instruments in the same frequency ranges. Those things would make the vocal clearer and stronger.

I don't know if you're going to be using a recording studio to record the final voice acting for the finished game, but if you are then there will most likely be a recording engineer and a mixing engineer who will sort all that out... you may also want to give that mixing engineer the music and atmospheric sound effects to mix too, so they can make sure it will work with the voice acting over it.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 04, 2016 at 21:37
This was all done in a recording studio. Please. I don't record stuff in my bedroom. It was de-essed, but there were issues with the orignal recording and I didn't have the time/budget to rerecord it. I also don't sweeten game footage with sfx, it's dishonest. What you hear came from the game.

Paulup - Mar 05, 2016 at 08:15
Ron - my apologies, I did not mean to imply that you were trying to do the vocal recording on the cheap or anything like that!
To be clear, I think the recording is very good, like an 8 or 9 out of 10, but that it could just be taken that bit further with a few tweaks from a mixing engineer to get it to a 10 out of 10.

It is great as it is though, and I know this is the finished trailer, so I was suggesting it more for the actual full game.
I didn't mean to suggest that you were adding sfx to the trailer... I meant that if in the final game there are areas where there is voice, music, and something like crickets or other atmospheric noise, that a mixing engineer would be able to make sure all the sound files work together well.
If you told an engineer that all these sounds may be triggered together at some point in the game they could mix the different sound files so that they work well together. The main thing would obviously be to make sure the vocal files work well over the music files so that they're not drowned out or masked.

It's not something that has to be done, it would sound ok without it, but if you are using a studio anyway, it would be relatively easy to do and it shouldn't be that much extra to have the mixing engineer sort out the sounds in that way. Maybe this is done anyway when you record a lot of vocals and music for a game, I don't know, it is just a suggestion.

I would not think any less of the recording if it were recorded in a bedroom - lots of people have very good home setups with a good condenser mic that will give a professional quality recording (especially for voice acting, as it is not as demanding as recording something like a full drum kit or a grand piano, etc.), but it's the mixing engineer or someone with a lot of knowledge of audio engineering that would take the recording from good to great and keep the clarity when different sounds play together.

Man #3 - Mar 05, 2016 at 16:54
Did you really need to be so ignorantly demeaning? Please let Ron do his thing, I'm sure he has plenty of experience with these sort of things. Oh and while we're all respectfully waiting for this thing to be released, you may need to have a seat in the corner to think about your ambitiously sad choice of words. Thank you.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 05, 2016 at 16:56
Be nice. We're all friends here. Group hug!

Stockfish Jensen - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:52
I live with my mum, I’m 42 years old, and I am scared to death. Can I get a hug too? Please?

R.C.M. - Mar 05, 2016 at 23:03
I'm very happy and grateful to see the TP team remain gracious even in the face of internet drama!

Paulup - Mar 06, 2016 at 08:27
@ Man #3 - Dude, we're on the same team! Ron is a big hero of mine and I would not knowingly try to demean or insult him and I am sorry if it came across that way.

All I am suggesting is that the audio for the final game be mixed by a mixing engineer if that's not the plan already - I did not know this would be so controversial, haha.
Maybe that is the plan already, I don't know. Or maybe that is just not possible or they're doing it another way or that mixing audio to that level of polish is not done or needed for this kind of game, that's cool too. It's just a minor thing I noticed and I wanted to provide some constructive suggestions that might help the game. I don't know if they know exactly what a mixing engineer could bring to the table - maybe they know all this already and so then yeah, I will have come across as patronizing, and I'm sorry about that.

From playing other games I have observed that the audio often seems to be recorded and then the raw recording put straight into the game unmixed, which is ok (hey, I made it through King's Quest 5's voice recordings, so it's not a make-or-break), but I am just putting it out there as a suggestion that it could be mixed by a mixing engineer to make it top notch.

Now please excuse me while I go back to my seat in the corner, lol.

Davide - Mar 10, 2016 at 19:40
Just a tip: do not use wall-of-text for unrequested suggestions. From your point of view, you are doing a favor by giving a "complete" answer, but most of the people tend to think that you are just giving yourself airs (look at me, I'm a guru!), implying that your interlocutor does not know nothing about the subject and would like to take from you a free lesson (while probably there is a reason for such a choice, e.g. time/money).
Look at this comment; it isn't yet a wall-of-text, but still 7 people out there would like to stick a chewing gum to my doorbell when I'm sleeping..

Paulup - Mar 11, 2016 at 10:19
If I had just succinctly put, "the audio has some issues and needs a mixing engineer, please fix for the finished game" I don't think it would have been any better received and it probably wouldn't even have been acknowledged, at least my wall-of-text got a response.

The bottom line is Ron has already said above: "there were issues with the orignal recording and I didn't have the time/budget to rerecord it."
I just hope the final game doesn't have the same issues, that's all.

Big Red Button - Mar 05, 2016 at 02:25
I don't think it's too unclear. And when the chips are down you are still able to activate the subtitles. Moreover, when a voice actor speaks very clearly it often sounds too posed.

Steve - Mar 05, 2016 at 03:29
I love the trailer!

But I did post it onto a forum I visit and one comment was this:

"I love pixel graphics and retro games and I don't think much of the style either.

The other thing that got to me was that it all looked so lifeless. There was no life in the world the characters were in - no trees or grass blowing in the wind, ripples in water, clouds moving across the sky etc. The only bit there seemed any life (fireflies) still looked dead.""

I replied saying that the game is still in WIP... can I reply again saying that those criticisms will (might) be fixed in the finished game?

Userious - Mar 05, 2016 at 07:29
That commenter is probably too young to know, but here's some shocking facts about the 80ies. There was no life in the world. No grass blowing in the wind, no ripples in the  water, clouds were still not conceived. Fireflies were antimatter sparks from the Big Bang. Young folks today.. know nothings, hah!

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 10:58
Ha! Those whippersnappers can't even remember when the world was all in sepia shades unlike us old farts!
Buying matching clothes was so much easier back then...

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 01:48
Thimbleweed Park is a game for many.
But not for everyone.

(Uhm,  nice slogan!)

Big Red Button - Mar 05, 2016 at 11:07
I wonder how that guy would have commented the C64 versions of Maniac Mansion and Zak, or the CGA version of Monkey Island.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 05, 2016 at 11:12
Things like background animation go in during a polish stage. There is no sense wasting time on them now, it's best to get the game done, then go back with what time you have add background animations where they are most needed. One of the nice things about not having a publisher is you don't have to do crazy things like finish sections of your game out of order so executive and marketing people can understand what you're making. I'm enjoying the freedom to make a game the way it should be made.

Arto - Mar 05, 2016 at 17:59
4K 3D version will be released late 2017.

DZ-Jay - Mar 08, 2016 at 06:03
Do they serve sausages and perogies at the polish stage?

Very nice. Most premium quality.

A Betamax tape in the inventory, eh?
You bet your sweet patootie that upon inspection it would comment "I see a bright future for this format, unlike VHS"

Userious - Mar 05, 2016 at 07:33
I liked the smokey, bitchy, sarcastic tone in the trailer. Don't change anything. It will be glorious :)) .

Over 140 comments and  no one mentioned the cameo of Dave and Sandy!!!
Amazing Trailer looking forward to play Thimbleweed Park

you never read the blog? we already know they are in that game.

Mario - Mar 05, 2016 at 09:10
Why there's no  voicemail tier-upgrade? I would love to upgrade to that tier...

Does she say "if the buddy would suit my needs" (meaning Reyes) or "if the body would suit my needs"? I'm not a native English speaker.

Okona - Mar 06, 2016 at 08:04
I also thought I heard "body" but I am also not a native speaker.
However, "buddy" seems to be the more sensible option regarding the context.

Nor Treblig - Mar 06, 2016 at 08:21
Right before and afterwards she's talking about Reyes. But then look at this: https://twitter.com/thimbleweedpark/status/705485853443751936

So it seems to be 'body' after all!

Thomas Braun - Mar 05, 2016 at 12:27
I'm so looking forward to this!
I just hope you won't get in trouble with a certain TV show. ;)

Maxxtro - Mar 05, 2016 at 12:41
It looks amazing! When is the official launch date ?
I want it now!!

Badde - Mar 05, 2016 at 13:28
Hi, Ron! Will the game get an ESRB ? I´m thinking about playing the game with my son.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 05, 2016 at 13:32
The game will be the equivalent of PG-13. I don't know about ESRB. I really dislike that organization. I'm fine with ratings to help people decide, but the ESRB is like dealing with the mob. I know a lot has changed since I dealt with them last and they have been better at dealing with indies, so I'll reserve judgement.

Derrick Reisdorf - Mar 07, 2016 at 16:42
Shhhh!!!  They're listening.

Badde - Mar 09, 2016 at 11:49
Thank you! I look forward to many enjoyable hours! I hope the game will be released at Friday; -)

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 09, 2016 at 11:54
...maybe it will be released on Friday, Sep 02, 2016.
The same day and month of the Monkey Island™ release in 1990 !!

It seems that the most of us has grown up since the times of Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island... we're adult now, and so is TP :_-(  I knew the murderer was the toilet! It has something strange, something too big to hide!

Thomas - Mar 05, 2016 at 16:14
Cool! But the GUI is very bold an prominent. That looks not good...

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 16:53
Well, that's how the GUI looks like. Better get used to it because it won't change, at least not for its original release.

It may change at the time when the Special Edition is released: a hidden UI optimized for monitors with 25:10 aspect ratio (which will be THE rage in the future). Also there may be or not be flying cars.

Gffp - Mar 05, 2016 at 17:47
Please, tell me you're joking. I hate 16:9, you can imagine what I could think of 25:10. I'll vomit like our beloved fbi agents. Screen large like this steal all the angle of vision. And I never want to be full immersed in a screen. I say the opposite: I expect a 4:3 version that would fit perfectly the retro style. It would be really awesome!!! 4:3! 4:3! 4:3! And a pint of grog!

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:46
I AM joking. Making the screens wider and wider will make them unusable. Maybe it's OK for movies, but not for serious work or even Internet surfing.

But 16:9 is actually a perfect format for me, it allows me to have long enough lines of text with something like a file list on one side of the screen.

Btw. since Ron is targeting Android (and other platforms) the engine has to support ALL different kinds of aspect ratios. Including 4:3, just for you :-)

Gffp - Mar 06, 2016 at 02:40
Ahahah I was shocked when I realized 4:3 monitors were no more in production. Then I'm so concerned about screen ratio that I doubt even if it is clear from your words that you're joking! Ehehe technology sometimes is moving too fast... Screens designed by Apple for macbook have a ratio of 16:10, they're slightly better, a better compromise between movie watching needs and working needs.

Big Red Button - Mar 06, 2016 at 05:14
Mobile devices have very different aspect ratios. For instance, the iPad has a 4:3 aspect ratio. So, a 4:3 mode seems to be projected and it would probably make sense to implement this 4:3 mode in the non-mobile versions as well, or better a variable aspect ration that gets adapted to the respective device. Or even an optional 4:3 pillarbox mode for any wider displays.

Of course I'm open-minded about a 16:9 mode, since you have to keep up with the times and it's the best way to use the full screen of a contemporary widescreen display. Though, I'm counted among the very few people who still use a 4:3 display, because it's still proper for me, and I would feel forced to plug in my modern 16:9 display instead, if there wasn't a 4:3 mode. Admittedly, it wouldn't be an actual problem, nevertheless it would be sad, given that TP is actually a retro game.

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 17:06
Maybe someone finds this helpful: I've made me a script to highlight new blog comments and also convert comment timestamps to local time:
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/17661-thimbleweed-park-blog-fixes
Should work at least with Chrome and Firefox.

Ema - Mar 05, 2016 at 17:31
It IS useful. I've never complained about that, but I don't like this blog platform. new comments get systematically lost, and it is really difficult to understand who's replying to who.... the system is somehow messy...
Just could you please explain a noob how to install your script?
Tank you

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:37
Sure, first you have to install an add-in called Tampermonkey (Chrome) or Greasemonkey (Firefox).
Then you follow my link and click on "Install this script", confirm installation and visit the blog.

It should then mark new comments since last visit / page refresh. By clicking on "new comment" it will go to the next new one. At least that's what it's meant to do.

Ema - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:54
Halluxes up! :-)

Brian S - Mar 10, 2016 at 16:41
Nice.  Just installed it and it's working great!  Thank you for writing this.

Brian S - Mar 10, 2016 at 21:08
And now, Nor, I am going to look a gift horse in the mouth - so I apologize for that.  Here's a suggestion for your script.  You could also enable it to identify changes on the "Archives" page, when it identified the message count changing since the last time the page was visited.  I am going to look into your script myself to see if I can make these changes myself, but I thought you might like to think about it also.  It would make it easy to quickly see updates on any of the older blog posts.

Nor Treblig - Mar 11, 2016 at 02:08
Good idea! And it should be fairly easy to implement, I will take a look at it when I have time.

Nor Treblig - Mar 11, 2016 at 04:00
I've updated my script! (note: you have to revisit blog posts because previously I didn't store the total count of comments)

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 11, 2016 at 05:58
Script updated. Thank you also for having implemented the save settings feature, as wished!
This script is really good!

Brian S - Mar 11, 2016 at 11:51
Thank you for doing that.  It's working great for me.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 01:34
I love you for this! Great! Thank you!
Now it's more readable!!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 14:53
Your script is almost perfect, I edited the client time zone to match my preference in italian.
One suggestion/improvement: is it possible to not lose the "new comment" label when I answer one comment?
I usually scroll through messages, then I reply to one of them, and when I return the "new message" labels disappear, because the page has refreshed.
Sincerely I didn't find a solution, but maybe you could have an idea...

Nor Treblig - Mar 06, 2016 at 20:51
Theoretically I could restore the previous setting when 'Reply' is clicked. But maybe it's easier to change your workflow, e.g. you could click on 'Reply' and open the link in a new tab but continue reading new comments until you've seen them all. Then you start writing replies.

Also that way you don't look like a fool if someone said the same thing one page further :-)

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 07, 2016 at 03:43
You are right, I will open my reply in a new tab ! Thank you.

Nor Treblig - Mar 06, 2016 at 20:54
I'm using .local() from Moment.js to convert to local time. Normally the correct timezone should be automatically detected but of course it can fail (well it worked for me, I'm actually in the same time zone as you).

How did you fix it? Did you use something like .tz("Europe/Paris")? What browser, OS and OS language are you using? What's your output of
new Date().getTimezoneOffset()
and
moment().format("Z")
?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 07, 2016 at 03:42
Oh, I just edited the "displayDateFormat" variable to show the date in DD/MM/YYYY format, that's all.
By the way, I wanted to display the names of days and months in italian instead of english. Is it enough to edit the "serverTimeZone" variable by writing "Europe/Rome" for instance? I thought it was necessary to match the date format of the blog.

Nor Treblig - Mar 07, 2016 at 04:30
Oh, then this was a misunderstanding.
Yes, displayDateFormat and displayDateTimeFormat are meant to be customized.

You may not change the server* ones, they have to match with what the web server sends us.
"America/New_York" is the time zone this web server uses to display times.

Using different locales is easily possible with Moment.js, I've changed my script accordingly and you can update it now (you will have to reapply your customisations). I've also right-aligned the text so I don't have to move the mouse/finger anymore.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 07, 2016 at 04:42
Updated. Fine! It works!! Thank you!

Arto - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:22
Her voice is perfect for agent Ray. The only thing that bothers me slightly are her ss (that's plural of s, according to English grammar).

Carlo Valenti - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:39
This comment is useless. So unessential.  An essay of senselessness. Sincerely.
Now de-ess this. And thiiiisssssssss
:)

Nor Treblig - Mar 05, 2016 at 18:56
You could have written 'statement' or 'post' instead of 'comment'.
Since there is no edit button you now have to live with it, knowing you will never be able change your post, having missed a great opportunity in your lifetime! :D

Ema - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:46
Nor, just make a script to make posts editable!

Ema - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:46
...and then teach me how to install it ;-)

Nor Treblig - Mar 06, 2016 at 04:23
:D
I am afraid this is not possible. At least not unless I find a SQL injection vulnerability or something similar...

Nor Treblig - Mar 06, 2016 at 04:36
And I don't think Ron would me like playing around with his servers...

Carlo Valenti - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:54
Oh pleeeeeeease, great Nor, you can change it. Please do it. Please.
OR... Is this part of the big mistery of freedom? Yes, now I probably have to live with that.
But I promise : I will never use the S again. I promise.
....
Rats.

Bogdan Barbu - Mar 05, 2016 at 23:04
Cool stuff. :D

I know it's all WIP until the release but the scene where Ray gets smacked in the face looks weird because

(a) the splat (dunno what to call it) appears before the mysterious villain's hand reaches her forehead (pause at around 1:12) and
(b) it's clear that there's nothing really dragging her (if there are indeed supernatural things involved, it still looks odd cause she got hit physically and also is being dragged a little bit at a time).

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 01:55
Ciao,
In my opinion it will be fixed during the polish phase.

Userious - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:20
You mean, right after your finnish and danish phase? :D

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 05:42
And Swedish, too! :-D

Arto - Mar 06, 2016 at 06:03
Doesn't finnish phase come last?

Userious - Mar 06, 2016 at 06:57
Don't go too far north, they'll finnish you for good.

Userious - Mar 06, 2016 at 07:01
And I'm not sure, if a finnished backer would suit Ron's needs ;-) .

longuist - Mar 06, 2016 at 07:03
Danish butter cookies are best served at tea/coffee time. So the danish phase should be the longest!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 06, 2016 at 14:46
If you mean these...
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2753/4210477045_b2b5a7fab7_b.jpg
... you are right. These are my favourite cookies, and are very famous in Italy.
And they are the longest because of its round box, even called "Schrödinger box": when you open it, you could find either cookies or sewing stuff!

longuist - Mar 06, 2016 at 19:20
Yes. Thats them. Hmm, tasty. The middle ones are mine!
I have one box with small screws and one with capacitors.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 07, 2016 at 04:37
I have a story to tell about the Danish butter cookies.
I have been thin, slim, for 40 years, except perhaps the first 2 years of my life.
My doctor told me to raise my weight, at *any* cost. The most simple way, in his opinion, was to eat. Eat. EAT everything!
But it can't be so simple, sometimes, believe me.
By the way, two years ago (now I am 42), I bought a Danish butter cookies box in the supermarket near my work location, and started to eat them with a cup of English tea, made by myself, durink break time.
One layer of cookies per day (you know, there are two layers). That's 30 cookies per day.
Two weeks and 5 boxes later, my weight raised by 4 kg! :-D
And since then, I started to eat, eat, eat almost everything... now I am fine!
Thanks to the Danish butter cookies that changed my metabolism!

longuist - Mar 07, 2016 at 08:30
Thats a great success story! I wish i could eat them on a regular basis. Last time i used a scale it turned out i am too short :(

Bogdan Barbu - Mar 06, 2016 at 13:45
I think you need to Polish until you Finnish.

Please don't ban me.

Franklin - Mar 06, 2016 at 13:50
Polish until you Finnish as long as you're not Russian it.

Bogdan Barbu - Mar 07, 2016 at 06:01
I have so much to learn.

Userious - Mar 07, 2016 at 08:27
You hear that, Ron? Don't russian it. Your fans have spoken.

Nor Treblig - Mar 06, 2016 at 04:25
ad b: I had to laugh when I saw it. It was so apparent that I assumed it was intentional. But who knows, we will see in the final game what really happens here!
Or... not... maybe Mighty Ron cuts the scene completely due to its low puppy count (his PR agency told him there need to be more puppies in the game).

Ema - Mar 06, 2016 at 03:39
Subtle.

Ricardo Marichal - Mar 06, 2016 at 04:58
I´ve translated the trailer to Spanish. Thanks to spiffy for the original english text:

No necesito a alguien hurgando.

Christopher - Mar 06, 2016 at 14:24
It’s great to hear some more of the music. It’s great. A really nice and different direction that adds so much to the atmosphere.

AbuJafar - Mar 07, 2016 at 07:25
Hey guys!

Are there any plans to do the release with translations (like german) in June as well? Or do we have to wait ? ;-)

Thanks again! I'm so excited !!

Greetings from Germany

Big Red Button - Mar 07, 2016 at 08:30
Are there any plans for a release in June?
For all I know, the game will be released in late 2016 for different platforms with english voices only and multilingual subtitles, including German subtitles.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 07, 2016 at 09:37
It's unlikely the game will be coming out in June. We're all working as hard and fast as we can. When it does come out, it will simultaneously be released in German, French, Italian and Spanish.

AbuJafar - Mar 08, 2016 at 07:34
Then it seems that you have to work harder and faster... :-P Just kidding! I'm looking forward to it! Thank you guys! :-)

AbuJafar - Mar 08, 2016 at 07:40
I'm sorry ! I thought I had read something about june...my fault!

Bon Antza - Mar 08, 2016 at 08:39
Not sure if I even want this game to be completed because this dev blog is so invigorating to follow.

Nor Treblig - Mar 08, 2016 at 08:46
Don't worry, this blog can be reused for Thimbleweed Park 2 and Thimbleweed Park 3a.

Arto - Mar 08, 2016 at 10:20
If the release will be pushed as far as at the end of the year, I bet the graphics will look old at that point. Like the game was made in 80s or something.

Michael Hoffmann - Mar 08, 2016 at 17:32
Don't care! Just never release the game - I want this blog and the podcasts to go on forever. I need my weekly fix! :-)

Userious - Mar 07, 2016 at 08:33
@ Ron Gilbert

I wondered if you can make it so it is possible to make fandubs, i.e. voice acting other than English?

Ron Gilbert - Mar 07, 2016 at 09:38
Yes, that will be possible. We won't release the full text for translation and dubs for a few months after release, so you won't be able to do it on day-one.

Joshua - Mar 07, 2016 at 09:16
Nice trailer! Great work!

PS: Except the ending - my friends asked me immediately if you could die in this game. Many of them played only the LucasArts games where you couldn´t die and didn´t touch any other adventures (like Broken Sword or Sierra games) because of this.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 07, 2016 at 09:28
Clever question.
You couldn't die starting from Monkey Island.
In Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken you can die in several ways...
...and since Thimbleweed Park is more "Maniac Mansion" than "Monkey Island"...

(of course I don't know the answer! :-) )

Rapp scallion - Mar 07, 2016 at 18:48
Not true dude! In Monkey Island 1 Guybrush could die if you stayed underwater for more than ten minutes - fact :-).

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 08, 2016 at 02:46
Ahahah, you are right! I did it the first time I've played it, but I forgot it.

mr. T - Mar 12, 2016 at 10:54
A friendly correction. You could die in Indy and the Fate of Atlantis.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 07, 2016 at 09:35
There are no dead ends. You can't die in the sense that you lose and have to start the game over. Franklin is dead, so I guess it's not fair to say you can't die.

Joshua - Mar 07, 2016 at 15:01
Thank you for clarifying. I told them that there will be no dead ends, because I am very pretentious / swanky.

Frankling cannot die,... okay. But is it possible that Franklin accidentally gets alive?

"The new classic point & click adventure game - you cannot die, but you can become the living dead!"

Rapp scallion - Mar 07, 2016 at 18:53
Game's lookin' hotter than a Steamin' Weenie Ron, I can't wait!

Mario - Mar 11, 2016 at 13:14
A good thing to die in MM and ZAK (besides the dead-ends) was the reason that you approched the games with much more care. and doing that over and over again felt like home. same as rehearsels, you get into it better and better by redoin it.

David Fox - Mar 11, 2016 at 15:17
As long as the death was intentional. I think there were one or two dead-ends in Zak that were more the result of sloppy design (my fault) than not.

Arto - Mar 11, 2016 at 16:05
Yes, I recall thinking at age 12 "David, David, David... that's just sloppy design, sigh".

David Fox - Mar 11, 2016 at 17:31
Yeah, I think I psychically heard you and felt very embarrassed.

ShullFinn - Mar 07, 2016 at 12:35
I'm not liking the women's voice. Maybe I'm picky, but she sounds a little rushed and like she has a bit of cotton in her mouth.  There were times when I couldn't understand what she said.... No rushing the dialogue. Must enunciated.

Stefano - Mar 07, 2016 at 16:13
This is really great stuff. I love the actress chosen for being agent Ray, but as many other pointed out it's all personal. Just upped my pledge - you guys deserve a big applause for making this game.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 07, 2016 at 16:24
Ron, I still can't pick Ransome's swear jar as a pledge. Why is that?

I'm gonna contact Humble bundle and ask them if I can cancel my purchase so I can buy the $40 (sigh!) soundtrack version.

Big Red Button - Mar 07, 2016 at 16:33
I don't know, but maybe the soundtrack is going to be available seperately at some online stores like Amazon, once the game is released.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 07, 2016 at 18:08
That's not good enough because I want the cover files as well.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 07, 2016 at 19:52
You should contact "support at-thingy terribletoybox dot-thingy com" first and let them know what the issue is.

Mattias Cedervall - Mar 07, 2016 at 19:55
Okay. Thank you for your reply, Ron.

Carlo Valenti - Mar 07, 2016 at 17:12
Is it possible that the game is already finished, and you are holding it back because you want all the fun?

Matthias Prinz - Mar 08, 2016 at 05:50
First things first: Looks amazing, atmosphere is awesome. Can't wait!!

One thing that doesn't quite work for me though are the fireflies. The fireflies in Monkey Island were PERFECT. So simple, so effective.
Here, I guess it's the whole "rotating pixels in higher resolution with interpolation" thing that feels uncanny for me. Same may apply for character scaling or the movement of things that doesn't follow the 320 x 200 grid.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 08, 2016 at 06:13
Fireflies have evolved during years. In 1990 they were as tiny as pixels, but in 1987 they were fat, rotating and with interpolation.

Carlo Valenti - Mar 08, 2016 at 08:19
LOL! :))))

Big Red Button - Mar 08, 2016 at 19:18
I just explored the fireflies in the forest in Monkey Island since I was curious, because I had not the slightest notion of which fireflies you meant, although it's the greatest game I've ever played and I'm extremely familiar with it.
Anyway, I agree with you that they look really impressive for a game from 1990! Their trajectories are randomized, aren't they?
On the other hand, seeing that I had completely forgotten about the fireflies in MI, I think that for now there are more important details than fireflies in such a game, albeit they are atmospheric.

Mario - Mar 08, 2016 at 08:26
personally i don't care if you expand to dezember 2016 if its worth the additional effort you need to put into the project to get the best out of the game.

Userious - Mar 09, 2016 at 02:41
I don't think that this will be quite possibru. M$ is a beach, so.. no, I don't think this can happen. Personally, I'd favour a reasonable "when it's done" approach, too.

Carlo Valenti - Mar 09, 2016 at 08:30
I wonder: will this blog post ever reach the goal of 264 comments?

Nor Treblig - Mar 09, 2016 at 13:18
...said the guy with the 264th comment.

Carlo Valenti - Mar 09, 2016 at 15:14
Horray! :D

Dominik - Mar 10, 2016 at 00:44
You meant the SECRET goal of 264 blog post comments! .... -shakes head-.... Way to spoil it for everyone!

;-)

Userious - Mar 10, 2016 at 04:05
I think, that it should be $C64 posts..

it.

Nor Treblig - Mar 10, 2016 at 05:02
Dammit, it should have been "We are working on it." but I got one of those hard questions wrong.
Maybe I should try again....

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 10, 2016 at 11:48
Are you finding ways to pass the time?

Nor Treblig - Mar 10, 2016 at 13:12
I've tried to improve my math skills but it's going nowhere.
So I've updated my script instead, if you can find the ...segreto :-)

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 10, 2016 at 16:32
AHAHAHAH!!! It works!
tellMeTheSecretOfMonkeyIsland = true;

I think your math skills are good enough!!!!

urielz - Mar 10, 2016 at 00:51
For Monkey Islanders out there. If you like Lego, a Monkey Island Project is currently on the front page of Lego ideas, pretty cool.

The Secret of Monkey Island - The Scumm Bar: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/133082

Nor Treblig - Mar 10, 2016 at 03:37
Although LEGO Monkey Island would be cool I'm not really happy with LEGO Ideas overall. Many projects don't get approved even reaching enough supporters.

Like this BTTF Train: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/35422 (reason I think was because they already had one BTTF project, WTF?)
Also I liked this Discworld related one: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/36302

Maniac Mansion fans should check out this project: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/76854
Although expired it's a nice concept of the mansion with many of its rooms!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 10, 2016 at 04:13
Awesome, the Maniac Mansion Lego project!! Cool tentacles, too!

Capitan Catarro - Mar 10, 2016 at 11:50
SERIOUSLY...

When it comes out???

Jura Snodtball - Mar 10, 2016 at 16:27
YES! Spooks in the hallway and Dave Miller flipping burgers! 2016 is gonna be a year of total awesomeness!

Oh I love messy kitchens with microwaves since Maniac Mansion! And also safes for the very same reason!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 11, 2016 at 08:08
A safe seems not to be safe under a microwave oven.
There is a spit on the safe, maybe it's a safe from a sailorman.
Is a sailor's safe safer in a sail, or it will fail?

Zombocast - Mar 11, 2016 at 09:23
so many dirty tissues, feels just like home!

Yes, and 8 days without a post :-P

We're all busy getting ready for the big Game Developers Conference for next week... sorry for the silence.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Mar 11, 2016 at 17:37
Great!

That's the second largest comment section I've ever observed!

Randy Johnson - Mar 11, 2016 at 16:13
I feel like the golden age of point-and-click adventure games just pulled up in a van, pitched me inside and then burned out for destinations unknown. In a good way. A very good way. I couldn't be more thrilled! Kudos to everyone involved!
