No Podcast For You

by Ron Gilbert
Dec 24, 2015

There will be no podcast this week because we're celebrating the birth of our savior, vamped consumerism. "Yeah, yeah, yeah", you're saying, "But did you get me anything?"

Yes, yes we did.

Enjoy this 1920x1080 HD Thimbleweed Park desktop wallpaper...

Thank you!

Thanks for this lovely wallpaper. This is of course within the top ten of my favorite christmas gifts in this year.
Thanks a lot and i wish you a merry christmas.

vegetaman - Dec 25, 2015 at 12:14
I like dark colored backgrounds so I am already using this. Fantastic!

Florence - Dec 25, 2015 at 12:16
trés magnifique!

Jaap - Dec 25, 2015 at 14:05
being a Mac user, it always disappoints me never being able to actually see my desktop background (as I'm constantly switching between open windows).

Did install the neat wallpaper though. Great stuff.

Nor Treblig - Dec 25, 2015 at 16:16
Wait a minute! There are also Windows users who actually work and never see their desktops!

Jaap - Dec 25, 2015 at 16:59
I guess I had to elaborate a bit more on this ;-). I also used to have Windows as my primary OS. Back then I often used the desktop shortcut icons to navigate to my most used programs (giving me a chance to enjoy the wallpaper).

On Mac I just use Spotlight to start any program I want without having to go to my desktop. Also with Windows somehow I got to see the wallpaper/desktop more often as I think it was somehow more default to have a screensaver or locked screen when you leave for a while. I also don't use/have that anymore with my current Mac laptop (which I also carry around all the time, so I don't feel like adding a lock on it).

Oh yeah and I also hardly every restart my Mac, so I also hardly see the wallpaper on startup.

So I guess you don't use the desktop shortcut icons that much?

Rodrifra - Dec 26, 2015 at 04:54
I guess that is a common problem for computer users, sice I hardly ever see my linux's background for the same reason. I do shut down my computer when not using it (energy saving will make a better world). But since I hybernate the machine it will start in the state where I left it and will only need to introduce my password for security reasons. If I ever want to access my computer from a remote place I just use WOL to turn it on from the remote place where I am.

Jaap - Dec 26, 2015 at 15:42
yeah I guess it's quite common for a lot of users, unless you use multi monitor setups like Nor Treblig also indicated.
And yeah I'm all for preventing energy waste. The macbook air I have also hibernates when closing the lid and doesn't eat up a lot of power. I also put the monitor lighting crazy low to be able to postpone the recharge as much as possible.

Nor Treblig - Dec 26, 2015 at 06:52
Yes, I rarely use the desktop at all. Beside the 'recycle bin' I have two other shortcuts there.
But honestly I DO see my desktop more often than I used to. With a multi-monitor setup (e.g. three monitors) you will see the wallpaper on the non-primary monitors more frequently.

On my mobile computer I nearly never see the desktop. But I actively switch to the desktop when I want to show/see the actual wallpaper (I have a wallpaper slideshow active "for showing off" purposes).
And here I will include this wallpaper of course :-)

Jaap - Dec 26, 2015 at 15:50
Ah yes the multi-monitor setup! I used to appreciate that also in my previous job. I now remember I actually used multiple computers to test websites in different browsers, so I used Synergy to share the mouse across different systems.

Heh, the wallpaper slideshow sounds kinda neat, since I do kind of miss having that bit of personalization goin'.

Marco Lizza - Dec 25, 2015 at 15:39
Which, in fact, thanks to Thimblevision(tm) is a rescaled 320x180 desktop wallpaper... neat! :D

Loftcraft - Dec 25, 2015 at 16:01

Mattias Cedervall - Dec 25, 2015 at 19:24
Thank you! :-)

I recommend the very funny movie "Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase! ;-) It's my favorite Christmas movie. I also recommend the Christmas episode "A Roswell Christmas Carol" (season 2 episode 10) from my favorite TV-show Roswell! ;-)

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Big Red Button - Dec 26, 2015 at 05:12
"It’s a Wonderful Life" is also a great movie. Besides there is a crowdfunding in that film, even though the word "crowdfunding" did not yet exist back then!

Merry Christmas!

Mattias Cedervall - Dec 26, 2015 at 07:08
I haven't seen the movie, but I will watch it now. Thank you for the tip! :-) Merry Christmas!

I never thought I should write something like this… but those leaves look creepy.

I love it. It really shows the artist's talent when bound to the pixel art constraints.

tomimt - Dec 26, 2015 at 12:49
Those are som purty pixels.

Leandro Pelorosso - Dec 26, 2015 at 14:48
I take my hat off, it looks amazing. Unrelated question: Are you using any binding library, like Sqrat, to implement all the bindings between Squirrel your code? Thank you!

Davide - Dec 26, 2015 at 16:19

I'm spoilering all those beautiful pieces of art

Mario - Dec 27, 2015 at 06:09
@RON & GARY: I have a real concern about the "TM" you put everywhere. As far as i know, and maybe you should really ask your lawyer, you are not allowed to TM anything that is not a registered trademark yet. Besides all the funny things regarding this TM and the past you need to be serious on that. People pay money for a real TM and there are bad people on the world who may be offended by this and want to argue with you about that. Please keep that in mind.

Arto™ - Dec 27, 2015 at 13:37
Nope. Registered trademark is ®. This is the one companies pay for.
™ is just a note to competitors, that one consider [this]™ to be their trademark. Nobody pay money for ™. If someone disputes the use of ™, they go to court, if the party who claims to have the ™ won't yield.

Mario - Dec 27, 2015 at 19:00
Ok. I hope u r right.

re: Suit against Mario over malicious use of TM symbol in order to obtain comic effect.
I think we have a case here. We can probably soak him for emotional distress and possibly punitive damages as well.
Hmm, sounds like legalese, I don't think I can translate the rest.

BTW very well, really beautiful this wallpaper. It seems the streets are like MM and Zak Mc Cracken, linear and with a point of view like you are exactly in front of buildings; while when you go outside the sceneries have a less linear point of view, more complex, like those we found in late scumm adventures since Monkey Island. I have to say that I prefer the second ones but if they're well combined it would be a point in favour.

[INTERNAL MEMO TO ARTO™ PERSONNEL, Dec 27]:

Come up with a joke about soft and/or hard christmas packages. Link it somehow to software and hardware, but do not use the phrase "software package", as it does not work as a punchline since it is a real thing, and that is not what Terrible Toybox Incorporated are offering as a Christmas present for 2015 celebration.

Jokes are to be submitted before Dec 25. This assignment is obligatory. Any member of personnel failing to submit a funny joke before the deadline will be executed.

Happy holidays to everyone.

Thimbleweedster - Dec 27, 2015 at 16:27
Hmm.. is this a hint to the sequel "Thimbleweed Pork - Revenge Of The Lost Cutlet" .. hmm.. it looks like the agent to the right is taking a quick piss. Geez.

Mario - Dec 27, 2015 at 19:04
Looks more like he is spanking his monkey.

Thimbleweedster - Dec 28, 2015 at 02:23
Why don't they puke? I don't get it... it's so wonderfully animated! :D

"NEXT!"

Droygon - Jan 26, 2016 at 11:34
Awesome (i'm late to reply...sorry)
This is so old-school and you guys really make good use of every pixel... great work

P.S.
Could you maybe up the rez next time - i'm not sure 1080HD is enough to capture all the little details in this wonderful scene

P.S.2
Thank you very much... by the way...
