WANTED: Playtesters

Feb 18, 2016

What is the most anticipated game of 2016? No, not that one... No, not that one either... OK, pretend that one isn't coming out... No, next? That's right! Thimbleweed Park!

With the year drawing to a close... Yes, I know it's only February, but one of the joys of working in the "game biz" is that you start panicking about the end of the year in February.

With the year drawing to a close, it's time we ramp up the playtesting. We've done phase one, which is getting friends and family in to playtest, but now it's time to open it up to a more hostile and unforgiving crowd, which is where you come in...

Phase two of our testing will still be in person. We will not be sending out copies of the game to play, so you will need to live in one of the fun filled locations of Seattle, San Francisco or London to participate.

You will sit down with a member of Team Thimbleweed and spend two or three hours playing the game while we quietly watch (lab coats and clipboards are TBD) and then ask you a lot of questions.

Our goal is to do one or more of these each week over the next few months.

If you're interested, please fill out THIS FORM.

- Ron

Mattias Cedervall - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:13
Oh, I really wish I could go there to help you test the game, but I'm not hostile!

Unai - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:17
Ohhh!! When I read "in person" I was so dissapointed, until I read... LONDON! Wooho!!

Is the form automatically saving our gmail account? Because there is no contact info field in it...

Ron Gilbert - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:20
Ha! I knew I was forgetting something.

Unai - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:33
Hahaha! Well, resent my application!

Josejulio Martínez - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:22
Any plans to have one in México?

Pat - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:25
I got all excited... and now I'm crashing.. Living in Australia can really suck some times :(
Looks like I'll just have to wait until the game comes out.

Soren Ladegaard - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:49
Can the rest of us get to see the new trailer instead? :-)

Ron Gilbert - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:50
Soon!

Carlo Valenti - Feb 19, 2016 at 16:45
Soon soon?

Tony M - Feb 18, 2016 at 18:54
OMG!  I'm so excited, I hope I get picked.   You like me, you really like me? :P

LOL.. and to the lucky people who get to play test!  Rock on!

Leandro Pelorosso - Feb 18, 2016 at 19:03
Aaaah! I live in Colorado but I can fly there! Any chance I can get my factory sealed Maniac Mansion signed by you  if I get picked?  ;)

robharty - Feb 18, 2016 at 19:08
Oh man, play testing this in London would be a dream come true!

I tend to play my adventures with my five year old now. (Recently finished the first spy fox, so now of course we also play "go fish" for real).

Do you need a father son pair, or is the content not appropriate for young'uns?

Big Red Button - Feb 18, 2016 at 19:35
In the last podcast they presumed a PG rating. So a father son pair seems to make sense, at least.

Brian Baker - Feb 18, 2016 at 19:14
I knew I shouldn't have moved away from Seattle!

vegetaman - Feb 18, 2016 at 19:36
This is what I get for living in the Midwest, lol.

Christopher Griffin - Feb 19, 2016 at 12:08
Ditto, my fellow person-who-lives-in-the-middle-of-nowhere.

Jasko2000 - Feb 18, 2016 at 19:45
Is coming in from San Jose OK or is it too far to be practical?

Alex - Feb 18, 2016 at 20:54
Soooooooooooo jealous.
But I also hate spoilers, so, ok. ^^

Zombocast - Feb 18, 2016 at 21:44
Ron, you should create an off site backup of your data. Cryptolocker, Locky, CRySiS: viruses are becoming real common where I work and they tend to target text files. I"d hate for your dialog to get corrupt!

Patrik Spacek - Feb 18, 2016 at 22:37
you should sit into the car and go over the states so other people can test it for you as well.

Farooq - Feb 19, 2016 at 00:30
Send a team member to Pakistan. They can stay at my place.

Stefan - Feb 19, 2016 at 02:04
Hi,
you might consider to do playtests in other languages as well, later, e.g. German - I propose Hamburg as a location :-)
Until then, I look forward to the new trailer!

Roman - Feb 19, 2016 at 02:35
Damn...I should start a kickstarter to pay me a flight from Cologne/Bonn to Seattle... :-)
actually I would be able to sleep there since a friend lives there and is working for that other big Seattle company starting with Ama***

Magnus - Feb 19, 2016 at 02:42
That settles it!
I'm moving to Seattle with my family right now!!

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 19, 2016 at 04:03
Well... happy playtesting!

Carlo Valenti - Feb 19, 2016 at 16:51
We could form the Italian delegation, and travel dividing the resources. You know, I can swim pretty well. Almost as much as I can fly.
After all: what's U.S.A.?
(must be a place I've seen at least once in some movie)

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 19, 2016 at 18:08
From Orio Al Serio (BGY) to London: 34 euros with Ryanair, round-trip.
2 hours. Do you think we could try?

Davanita - Feb 20, 2016 at 05:36
I'm in!

mich - Feb 19, 2016 at 04:08
We all know Boris's work is flawless, but will there be local playtesting for the localized versions anyway?

LogicDeLuxe - Feb 19, 2016 at 06:07
I don't think that there is a flawless localized version of any game (or movie). There are a few bloopers in the Monkey Island translations. Those are easily forgivable, considering he always finds the appropriate style spot on. I can not think of anyone better suited for that job.
When he went to Microsoft, my first thought was: "such a waste of skills.". I'm glad, he doesn't want to waste it after all.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 19, 2016 at 04:26
I'm just going to put it out there...
To open playtesting to potentially everyone in the world, without moving and without giving away copies of the game over the internet...
...
...could the member of Team Thimbleweed open a TeamViewer/WebMeeting session on HIS computer, letting the designed playtester connect on his machine, to play the game?
The Team Thimbleweed would quietly watch, and both parties can interact via webcam/hearphones/mic.
And the game is firmly glued in the Team Thimbleweed hard disk.

For Xbox testing the above is not possible, but at least for the Win PC version with the mouse, it is.

Ray & Reyes - Feb 20, 2016 at 16:59
Some of the "hostile" people Ron was talking about would certainly record the whole session and then release it online, spoiling all the fun and ruining countless hours of precious work. We cannot allow that!

longuist - Feb 21, 2016 at 09:45
I certainly would not do that, that's unethical.
p.s. can somebody recommend a good screen-grabber software?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 23, 2016 at 16:32
Argh, you are right, I didn't think about this...
OK, better in person!!

Paul - Feb 19, 2016 at 06:09
Are the play test session likely to happen during the week or at the weekend?
Also do you know roughly where in London the sessions would happen?
I'd love to sign up, but I don't want to waste anyone's time if I can't make it =)

Ron Gilbert - Feb 19, 2016 at 09:29
You should sign up, it takes less then 1 minute.

Paul - Feb 19, 2016 at 11:23
ok done =) hope I can make it.

Maurizio - Feb 21, 2016 at 09:34
That is what I just did.

Cheers

SunDancer - Feb 19, 2016 at 06:17
Oh god,  please do a test for the rest of the world... I'm dying here... I'm done watching all Doctor Who and played Fallout 4 to the end... please give me my fix! 8)

Steffen - Feb 19, 2016 at 09:52
OK, now I regret that I live in Germany and not in one of the fun filled locations. But anytime the most anticipated game of the year 20XX will be developed in Germany and than I am in.
Have fun guys and don't forget all the retro gamers around the world.

Damian - Feb 19, 2016 at 11:15
Which London? Sorry, but there is plenty of them.
Is it London, ON, London, UK, other?
I'm up for the first one.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 19, 2016 at 19:00
LON airport, as shown on the map in Zak McKracken

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 20, 2016 at 01:48
Just to make it clear: testing can be made only in these destinations:

(WARNING: Exit Visa Code Required to London)

Ema - Feb 20, 2016 at 04:57
Nice.... :-)

Nor Treblig - Feb 20, 2016 at 20:53
Awesome!

Christopher Griffin - Feb 19, 2016 at 12:10
What, no published Remote Desktop App to play from distances, with a simulcast recorded Skype connection?  I thought _I_ was lazy!

Capitan Catarro - Feb 19, 2016 at 13:36
Will u make some in Italy?????
Or let's arrange a VPN!

PLEASE

David Fox - Feb 19, 2016 at 14:09
Having run one playtest so far at my home office, I can say that doing it in person is critical at this stage. We're watching your facial expressions, your subtle sighs of frustration and pleasure, watching where you click, and especially listening to your running verbal narrative of your thought processes. Even with multiple cameras, it would be hard to capture it all.

DZ-Jay - Feb 20, 2016 at 09:52
Then, I'm available for a Skype play-session.  I have multiple devices, so you could capture my demeanor in multiple angles. :)

    -dZ.

Arto - Feb 19, 2016 at 14:55
How about multiple cameras and microphones, AND body sensors?

All right, I'll just buy a Learjet. Unless it is a must that I have to live in one of these cities? In that case I have to sell an apartment and get a new one... Do I need a green card?... I'll just go to London.

David Fox - Feb 19, 2016 at 15:52
Learjet sounds like overkill... a plane ticket will do :-) And no, since it's just a few hours of playtesting, you can visit one of these cities for a day.

Arto - Feb 19, 2016 at 16:57
Oh no no no... I bought a plane ticket once and ended up in a King's spaceship... Not going to do that again!
:-)

LogicDeLuxe - Feb 20, 2016 at 05:45
Hopefully, you got the lotto numbers then. Should be worth it. :)

Sushi - Feb 19, 2016 at 16:05
Being 30-dead, my doctor doesn't allow me travel that far just for a game.
Too bad, I would have liked to meet you in person.
So just send me the shirt, all right?
My all time fav game is that little pony thing, naturally... :P

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 19, 2016 at 19:03
Ron, do you mind to add a textbox for some free comments, in the registration form?

Amb - Feb 20, 2016 at 02:39
This is one time i wshed i lived in America :/

Andrada - Feb 22, 2016 at 00:31
I might be a bit late to the party here; but if we will be in any one of those play testing vicinities in the next few weeks/months (even though we don't normally reside there) is there a possibility we could help out with play testing? There's no "I'm here for a few weeks" field in the form so not sure if that would qualify....

Michelle - Feb 23, 2016 at 20:25
If you guys ever want an unpaid slave (intern) and are coming to Vancouver, let me know!
