Phone FAQ

When do I have to submit my name and voicemail recording?

You can submit them anytime between now and July 1st and change them as often as you like. If you're not ready to submit your voicemail recording, we suggest you submit your name now so it's locked in and submit the recording later.

I never got, or lost my phonebook invite email! Am I doomed?

No, not at all. Just CLICK HERE and enter the email addres you used to back the project and we'll send you a new one.

Where phones even invented in 1987?

No, we're taking creative license.

Can I put my dog in the phone book.

Yes, that is OK, but make his or her name realistic: Pep Gilbert.

Can I put my cat in the phone book.

No, I'm allergic to cats.

Why does my name have to be unique?

Players might need to look your name up to get a phone number and we need to be able to give them a unique name to find.  Try adding a middle initial or middle name to make it unique.

I didn't back during the Kickstarter, can I still get my name in the phonebook?

No, unfortunately that was a Kickstarter exclusive and we want to be fair to the people that did back during that time.

Does it have to be my real name?

It needs to be the real name of you, your significant other, friend, child, pet, etc. The point of the phonebook was to immortalize you or someone you love in the game.

Can my name include a funny nickname like Todd "Funny Pants" Smith.

Yes, that is OK as long as it's still under 30 characters and not offensive (we get to decide if it is or isn't).

When do I need to fill in my name and have my recording?

You have until May 1st. You can change any information, including your recordings, up until that date.

Can I have fun with my recording, or do I have to play it straight?

Have fun with it! Voicemail recordings in real life can be very fun and off the wall, just make it something you would put on your voicemail.

Can I use gibberish or some made up language?

Yes, that is fine, as long as it is truly made up.

Christopher Griffin - Dec 30, 2015 at 11:17
Okay, I'm asking for clarification -- I CAN read for the record, but 29 characters seems like an arbitrary length, so is it 30 chars or less, or 29 chars or less?

Ron Gilbert - Dec 30, 2015 at 11:30
It's 30 or less characters. The reasons for the limit is so it will fit on one line in the phonebook. If your name was all skinny characters, we could fit more, but 30 is nice average limit.

Vesko Gavrilov - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:02
Should I put my real name or some funny name?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:10
It needs to be your real name. You can put something funny in "quotes" if you want.

Ron "Grumpy" Gilbert.

Dave - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:26
How long do we have to do it?  (I am still getting over a cold and sound like Chuckie from Rugrats.)

Ron Gilbert - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:27
You need to do it by May 1st, so you have a lot of time to get over the sniffles.

Bob - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:35
Can the answering machine message include multiple family members speaking?

Bob: "You have reached the home of Bob..."
Jenn: "and Jenn."
Bob: "We are probably hanging out at the river right now so..."
Both: "leave a message and we will get back to you."

Ron Gilbert - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:37
Yes, totally OK, and fun!

Tisa - Feb 05, 2016 at 04:54
Ooh! On a similar note, if we can fit it in 30 characters, can it be two names?

I mean I guess it would be a landline so technically more than one person in the house would be able to pick it up anyways as opposed to a mobile phone lol

Eric - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:53
I assume that a phone number will be associated with each person.  How will that be chosen? Randomly or first come first assigned?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 04, 2016 at 20:54
That is all random, but it will be fixed, so your number will be the same for everyone playing the game.

WhiteRakogis - Feb 05, 2016 at 08:03
Is there any way I could request a specific number?  You see, I'm a writer, and I have this specific four-digit number I like to include in my stories regularly as a running gag.  It would be amusing if this could be part of my in-game phone number.

Jammet - Feb 07, 2016 at 05:38
You mean like 555-STARWARS, hehe, that would be a fun idea.

Tisa - Feb 04, 2016 at 21:42
So there's a rule that says not to use copyrighted stuff but it's technically yours... Am I allowed to say something like "I'm playing Monkey Island please leave a message after the beep" or make any form of reference to Monkey Island? :P

Ron Gilbert - Feb 04, 2016 at 22:00
That is fine. Music or actual recordings of the copyrighted stuff is the issue. Don't go on a Disney rant about the Monkey Island rights, I'll probably nix that.

Tisa - Feb 05, 2016 at 04:56
Got it, ixnay on the isneyday! XD

Port - Feb 04, 2016 at 21:46
Is it ok if my voicemail voice is an impression, but is never called out to be an impression (e.g. a gravely Batman voice ala Christian Bale Batman asking people to leave their name, number and amount of coconuts they wish to purchase)?

Jen Aside - Feb 04, 2016 at 22:24
is my name ok?

Mick - Feb 05, 2016 at 01:47
Can be the voicemail in my mother language, or at least part of it, or only english (even if it is my caveman english :)) is allowed?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 03:58
Hi Mick,
you should record the voicemail in your mother language, then write the original text and the english translation (for checking purposes).
You will find everything in your personal voicemail page.

Tommy Twoears - Feb 05, 2016 at 04:51
Then again, the personal voicemail page states that "The recording must be in English, French, German, Spanish or Italian.", so my guess is that the answer would be dependent on the mother language in question?
For instance I'm having my two year old son do the recording and we're Finnish - he'd probably have more to say in finnish, but he does do a fairly lovely 'hellooo' on the phone so I guess we'll have to go with that.

Alex - Feb 05, 2016 at 02:17
Is it ok to play a guaranteed non-copyrighted, self-made and composed tune on my guitar while talking? :) This would be soooo much fun.

Chris - Feb 05, 2016 at 02:29
I'm unsure if i should speak the Voicemail in my motherlanguage (german) or in english? Any other Germans here? What would you do?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 04:00
I'd like to listen your voice in real German voice! :-D

Denis Sowa - Feb 06, 2016 at 18:11
Will the German voice also available in the English game or only in the German translated game?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 06, 2016 at 21:33
If you record your message in German (or any other language), it will be in that language in all versions of the game. They will not be translated. That's kind of the charm of it.

Bonzenmann - Feb 05, 2016 at 06:40
I'm also from Germany.
I will record the message in english. After all Thimbleweed Park is located in the USA, isn't it?

Chris - Feb 05, 2016 at 06:47
Hm ok...I think i'll do it in german with accent. i'm still unsure. Additionally i had absolutely NO idea what to record.

Daniel Martinez - Feb 05, 2016 at 14:11
Hi,

I'm not German, actually I'm from Spain so I have recorded it in spanish :D

Sebastian - Feb 06, 2016 at 04:17
Hallo Chris, also wir haben unsere Voicemail auf deutsch aufgenommen. Ein bisschen Mehrsprachigkeit darf ja ruhig sein ;-)

Adrian - Feb 28, 2016 at 16:59
Hi, I'm german, too! I think I'll do mine in german... I thought about many funy things, like the answeringmashine of Dr. Frankenstein and you find out only step bx step while listening... but no, I'll do something different! ;-)

presto - Feb 05, 2016 at 02:41
Hi There guys,
i did two voicemail kickstarter donations (one for me and one for my brother as a gift) but i only have ONE link to do the voice mail. can you check to see where the other email i should have is so i can forward it to my brother?
THanks!

prestodigitator - Feb 05, 2016 at 02:43
actually, one was through kickstarter one was using the humblebundle way. any thoughts Ron et al?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 05, 2016 at 09:21
I have not imported the Humble pledges that were done during the Kickstarter yet, so that will come in a few days.

prestodigitator - Feb 05, 2016 at 10:21
awesome, thanks Ron!

MrT - Mar 04, 2016 at 01:55
Have the Humble pledges been imported now? I still have only received the link for the kickstarter, while I pledged from both for the book level.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 03:24
Hi, I have just uploaded the voicemail file. It's in italian, but I can't select the "Italian" radiobutton. It's sticked to "English".
I have already wrote the italian and english text, and uploaded the .mp3 file, but the radiobutton still doesn't allow me to select "Italian" language.

Ipek - Feb 05, 2016 at 04:40
Hi,

Can we record the voicemail in two languages (for example English+Italian etc.)?

Thanks

Ron Gilbert - Feb 05, 2016 at 09:24
You can only record one voicemail, but it can contain multiple languages, as long as they are the ones listed and you provide an English translation.

Mattias Lönnqvist - Feb 05, 2016 at 05:10
During the kickstarter I am fairly certain that the information was that we could enter a recording in any language. But, now it seems we can only choose English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

I would prefer if I could use my native language, i.e. Swedish, but the information on the upload page states that I am not allowed to use that language.

Tom Dribblyshanks - Feb 05, 2016 at 06:25
Well, checking from the campaign, it didn't really mention the language issue at all:

"Anyone who backs at $50 or higher will not only get their name in the Thimbleweed Park phone book (used for actual puzzle solving), but you’ll also be able to record your own custom voicemail message when the number is called (subject to approval)."

and in the pledge description:
"Get your name in the exclusive Thimbleweed Park in-game phone book (subject to our approval). Your name could be the solution to a puzzle. Plus game + soundtrack."

So we're pretty much bound by what the authors decide.

One might argue that it's important that the voicemail sounds like the captioning / subtitles attached to it, but then again, it could be just unintelligible gibberish in the real world as well, so it would be fun if we were allowed to do the recording in any language as long as the description is included.

Maybe this would pose a bit of a problem with checking that no profanities and whatnot get included in a language not understood by the development / testing team? I mean I wouldn't understand a single word of mandarin chinese, and couldn't tell if the speech really did say "leave a message after the tone" or "x never marks the spot"..

Matthias B - Feb 05, 2016 at 12:18
Record in Swedish and select "German". They won't notice.

Nor Treblig - Feb 05, 2016 at 12:43
They most likely restricted it to those languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish) because they will have people checking the uploaded audio and text with the English translations.

Ben McKenzie - Feb 05, 2016 at 06:16
Is it okay if I reference a character I created and play in an audio series as a stupid in-joke? The only reference is the character's name, which is very generic. I've tried to make the name incidental to the gag, in that the version of me in the message has no idea who this other guys is, and wants people to stop leaving messages for him, even though they sound the same. But I know fans of our series would get a kick out of it if any of them play the game.

kovu94 - Feb 05, 2016 at 06:49
Hi,

I would like to include my nickname but it contains two characters. Is it possible to add it? That would be great.

Thanks,
Sebastian

kovu94 - Feb 05, 2016 at 06:50
Numbers, not characters ;-) Stupid friday ;-)

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 08:50
Numbers are allowed characters, so you can use them.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 08:52
Whoops, I checked the page... allowed characters are only the following:
".,/&-:ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖØÙÚÛÜÝÞßàáâãäåæçèéêëìíîïðñòóôõöøùúûüýþ

So, no numbers!

Ron Gilbert - Feb 05, 2016 at 09:32
That was an oversight. I've added numbers to the list.

Kovu94 - Feb 05, 2016 at 11:41
Thanks :-)

Alex - Feb 05, 2016 at 08:24
If we need to record the message in the native language, who is going to record the message for the other languages? If my English is good enough can I also do this recording myself?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 05, 2016 at 09:28
The voicemail messages will not be translated, they will be as they were recorded and the text displayed will be the text you entered, in the language it was recorded in.

Jammet - Feb 07, 2016 at 05:42
Is it possible to write the text so that when the game displays it, it knows where to split the sentences?
"Hello..."
"... I'm not here right now."

Is such a thing possible? Or is it always going to be the entire message in one big chunk of text?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 07, 2016 at 09:31
That's an interesting issue I didn't think of... let me think about that for a bit.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 10:04
Odd.
Using Firefox, I wasn't able to click on the radiobutton "Italian", to select the language.
Using Chrome, it works.
I returned to firefox, and I see the changes, but when I click on another languages, it automatically select "English".

Ron Gilbert - Feb 05, 2016 at 10:10
There was a bug in my html. It should work now. Thanks.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Feb 05, 2016 at 10:33
Confirmed, it works now!

Timon - Feb 05, 2016 at 12:02
Hi there.
Im ceo of own business, am i allowed to name the business and www adress?

Like, hi there im xy ceo blabla at www.xy thanks to leave a message...mushrooms?

smartypants - Feb 05, 2016 at 13:08
But the WWW wasn't invented yet back in 1987.

George Tasopoulos - Feb 05, 2016 at 12:53
Is a recording with "mistakes" allowed? For example, a background event that can be heard but the speaker didn't notice while recording?

Damian - Feb 05, 2016 at 13:08
Uploaded mine!
Not too original, I guess. :P
I'll see if I can come up with something funnier. If not, I'll leave it as is.

crabby person - Feb 05, 2016 at 13:23
I have to say something nice about someone today, which I usually don't do. Does anybody have an idea what to say to whom? Help!

crabby person - Feb 05, 2016 at 13:25
Only 4.5 hours left...

Geneva - Feb 05, 2016 at 13:46
I've legally changed my surname since backing the Kickstarter; can I use my new name or am I bound by the name I backed with?

Philipp Smart - Feb 05, 2016 at 13:49
Is it allowed to have baby jabbering in the voice mail? I'd love to put in my 1 year old daughter. She certainly will love to play Thimbleweed in the future so this would be the ultimate flash. But she's only able to jabber :) And if yes, how should I transcript it? Like "Babyblabla" or "baby jabbering noises"? :D

Philipp Smart - Feb 05, 2016 at 14:34
I guess I will transcript it like f.e.: "Bacawlrb bla bllah wbrl blrrrll"

Daniel Martinez - Feb 05, 2016 at 14:16
Hi!

Can I record a message like this?

Hi, I'm Daniel Martinez, but can't assist you right now because I'm probably playing some classic style adventure game such as Thimbleweedpark... Please leave your message and I will call you back. thanks :D

Ron Gilbert - Feb 05, 2016 at 14:18
Yep!

Damian - Feb 06, 2016 at 03:28
We have our numbers! :D

Ok, I had this idea of us referencing each other (it's a small town, we should know each other, right?).

Like, you could say "for a good time, call Steven at XXXX" at the end of the message. Or "John knows the secret of Monkey Island, reach him at XXXX". Or things like that.

So if you want to do something like this, just leave your number in a comment, and we can reference each other.

My phone number is: 2684
I'll reference the next person to leave his number with the Monkey Island line (remember to put your real name to be accurate, and it would be fun if you say something like "This is Xxxx, I'm not at home, and please stop calling me about the secret of Monkey Island! Call Xxxxx at XXXX, he really know it". Or something similar. :D

Cheers!

Andreas Fröhlich - Feb 07, 2016 at 12:04
Great idea! I like it.

I had a similar idea of having a small puzzle game within the game that
involves calling different numbers. Something like:
"Hello, this is Andreas Fröhlich. I'm not at home right now 'cause I'm trying to find my missing
dog Spiffy. I've lost him near the harbor. If you have any information call Sanders at Xxxx he is
investigating in the matter."

And in a second message you could hear the horn of a ship, so you could guess that
there is a harbor nearby.
But that would involve a lot more planning, so I'm going with your idea.

My number is:  1477 (Andreas Fröhlich)
Here is my line:
"Hello, this is Andreas Fröhlich. I'm not at home at the moment. Please stop calling me about the secret
of Monkey Island. Call Xxxxx at XXXX, he really knows it. But if you have any information about my lost
dog Spiffy just speak after the signal."

OK, who is the next one?

Damian - Feb 08, 2016 at 05:08
Done! :D

I hope more people get into this idea. :)

Damian - Feb 17, 2016 at 04:09
Ok, I've officially named this the MONKEY ISLAND SECRET CONSPIRACY. And, in any case nobody else wants to join, just refer to my name, to create an infite loop. :D
The idea is, the last one to join the conspiracy, should ideally refer back to my number, to create an endless loop.
It would be fun, no matter the number of people participating. :)

Taylor - Feb 18, 2016 at 04:00
Awesome, I want in! My name's Taylor Barndt (If you use my name in your voicemail, you can just use my first name if you want).

Here's my message:

"Hi, you've reached Taylor, I can't come to the phone right now. *dog barking* Quiet Spiffy!!! Sorry about that... If you're calling about the Secret of Monkey Island... I'm not at liberty to discuss that. Just call Xxxxx at XXXX. He (or She) will hook you up. And don't leave a message, I never check this stupid thing."

Taylor - Feb 18, 2016 at 04:03
OH! I forgot - my number is 7225

Maggie - Feb 21, 2016 at 23:06
Yay, I'm totally in for this! My name's Maggie Brevig, and my phone number is 6622.

Here's mine:

"This is Maggie's phone. I'm screening my calls because SOMEONE thought it'd be funny to tell people I know the Secret of Monkey Island... well I don't! But if you call XXXX at XXXX, you might get somewhere. If you're calling about my band's auditions, just leave 16 bars at the beep and I'll get back to you if you're any good. Thanks."

Damian - Feb 23, 2016 at 12:40
So, so far it's Damian > Andreas > Taylor > Maggie... :)

Jesse Kinross-Smith - Mar 04, 2016 at 01:46
I'm interested in tagging on the end if you guys are still able to accomodate me - and here is my proposed message:
My name is Zac Kinross-Smith and phone number is 1897:

"Hi, you've called Zac - he's too young to come to the phone right now, and it might take a few years for him to get back to you.  If you're asking about the Secret of Monkey Island then here's what you need to know.. Guybrush <toddler noises drown out the critical words> - isn't that amazing!!!  Anyway I've got to go - Zac's in the pantry again! - call XXXX on XXXX if you need further info!"

Damian - Feb 06, 2016 at 04:29
Funny fact: while the city sign states that Thimbleweed Park has a population of 81 (sorry, 80 after the crime), there will be 3563 phone numbers (if my calculations are right).

So, I guess the phonebook is for the whole Thimbleweed County area, and not just the town. :)

So, most of us live not in Thimbleweed Park, but rather in Rudbeckia, Anemone Fields or Pulsatilla...

Yes, those are al thimble genus plants. :P

McDrake - Feb 06, 2016 at 05:13
I it possible to change the name for the phonebook  (until march 31)?

Andreas - Feb 06, 2016 at 13:52
Hello there!

I got a small non commerical "company" and we are producing weird sci-fi movies (https://www.youtube.com/user/Horizontalfilm/). Would it be ok, to use the name of the "company" (Horizontalfilm International)? Becuase the name would stand for much more people than myself ;-) I would like to start with a small Soundeffect (made by myself and totally loyalty free ->https://soundcloud.com/horizontalfilm/jingle_international)... would that be ok as well?

Thank you very much and i'm sorry for my bad english

Janko - Feb 06, 2016 at 16:08
Let's say I have a very unusual middle name, such as Guybrush (true story!) - will you accept it for the phone book?

Simon Simon - Feb 07, 2016 at 13:58
Gary and Ron, will you and Team Thimbleweed also be in the phonebook?
Due to the podcast we are familiar with your voices, and it would be fun to hear you in the game...

Keep up the good work!

Sascha - Feb 07, 2016 at 15:54
Can I put "family smith" or the like as a name + have all family members say something in the voice mail?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 07, 2016 at 22:14
Yes, that is fine.

Markus - Feb 08, 2016 at 11:26
probably it is a stupid question but doesn't matter.I do it....  About  the order of the name chosen: first name and last name or  second name and first name?  I've  been noticed that your example are first name and then last name ( ex Ron Gilbert...)

thx guys ;)

Ron Gilbert - Feb 08, 2016 at 11:28
First Name Last Name

Guybrush Threepwood
Zak McKracken
Bobbin Threadbare

Björn - Feb 08, 2016 at 13:15
My native tongue is a local dialect here in Germany - does it need to be High German?

Lex - Feb 09, 2016 at 07:30
I have the same question. I don't think I would ever use Dutch on my voicemail, never have either. My dialect sounds a decent amount German so I hope this won't be a big deal...

Xanobius - Feb 10, 2016 at 09:21
And ones more!
I'm from switzerland, but also from a region with a very special kind of german dialect (even for switzerland). So would that be ok, or should I do it in standard german?

Philippe - Feb 28, 2016 at 07:11
I'm from Switzerland too and please can somebody give an answer for voice message with dialect? Ron???

Ron Gilbert - Feb 28, 2016 at 09:44
Doing dialects is fine.

Philippe - Feb 28, 2016 at 14:46
Thanks Ron. Im really so happy be a part of this game and can't wait to play it, click all things and call all numbers ;-) Thanks.

Eric - Feb 08, 2016 at 22:23
The rules about the recording say "The recording should be like a real answering machine message.". What exactly does this mean? Like it has to be some sort of "after the beep" message kind of thing? Or can you record like a short, comical 'wrong number' type call?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 09, 2016 at 09:19
I'm not going to be too picky about what is in the recording, as long as it's not violating someone's copyright. Again, make it something you would reasonable put on your voicemail message. People put some pretty crazy/funny stuff on those messages.

C.F. - Feb 09, 2016 at 14:18
Hi, I have a small retro-gaming themed website where I trade and write about old computer games.  Is it okay to use the site name as opposed to my own?  (It's clean.)  And is it okay to promote the site a little in the message?

Thanks.

Damian - Feb 13, 2016 at 08:36
I hope there's no problem in using a text-to-speech recording...
I was not liking my voice in English, so I used this: http://onlinetonegenerator.com/voice-generator.html
There are others out there (some even generate a file for you).

Fledge - Feb 15, 2016 at 20:57
Aw mannnnn.  I just finished crafting a goofy voicemail in the style of 90's cartoon commercial break "bumpers", even composed and recorded the bumper music to boot, only to find out during the submission process that "the recording can not include music of any kind".  Whaaaatttt.  I really, really, really wish that warning (and all the others in the submission process) had been updated onto this faq page before I went to all that trouble.

Robert - Feb 17, 2016 at 17:02
Hate to bother you with another question, but you have said several times to make it something we would ostensibly use as a message ourselves. I had planned on using a very cryptic message, as if someone had called some secret number they aren't supposed to know about. Is that ok, or off-limits?

Socrates Medina - Feb 18, 2016 at 07:16
Can I mention Maniac Mansion on the recording and some of the characters in that game?, in a funny way of course..

Ron Gilbert - Feb 18, 2016 at 09:09
Yes

Jamie - Feb 20, 2016 at 15:14
Can I include a job title in my phonebook listing (provided it's <30 characters)?
e.g.
-John Smith, Attorney at Law
-John Smith, Beautician
-John Smith, Freelance Wizard

Ron Gilbert - Feb 20, 2016 at 15:20
You can, but we might flag it if the job title might make solving a puzzle confusing.

Ron Gilbert - Feb 20, 2016 at 15:21
For example, we won't allow attorney or lawyer, becasue there is one in the game that you need to call.

Jamie - Feb 20, 2016 at 15:23
Okay, sounds good. Thanks!

Orcan Ogetbil - Feb 20, 2016 at 23:42
Can I include some music (that I will write myself) in the message? How about if the music has a slight hint of Lucasfilm games tunes (that only the careful listeners will notice)?

Ron Gilbert - Feb 21, 2016 at 09:42
Unfortunately, there can be no music, it's just not a risk we can take given the stupidly litigious nature of the morons who run the music industry.

Orcan Ogetbil - Feb 21, 2016 at 14:33
I understand the concern. I had such cool plans... Time to go a capella then :)

Sven_Q45 - Feb 29, 2016 at 15:41
True. Especially here in Germany and youtube...

Jonathan - Feb 21, 2016 at 10:37
Can I speak with some kind of local (german) accent? And if so, should I write the in-game-text as clean german or as a representation of that accent? English translation will be normal of cause.

Ron Gilbert - Feb 21, 2016 at 11:01
Write the german as a representation of the accent.

Damian - Feb 23, 2016 at 13:51
Will the dev team have numbers in game?
If yes, will you disclose it or will it be an Easter Egg?

Sven_Q45 - Feb 29, 2016 at 15:40
I have one question. (I now saw that numbers are allowed) I typed in my name and it says: Your name contains invalid characters, in red. And it also says: Name updated, in green. Is the name ok then? The name is still like I typed it.

Vesko - Mar 03, 2016 at 19:51
Can you recommend me good hardware and software to make the highest quality recording?

Ron Gilbert - Mar 03, 2016 at 20:13
All the voice recordings are going to get compressed and processed so they sound like they are over a phone, so you're not going to need super high quality.  Just a standard headset should work fine.

Sebastian - Mar 06, 2016 at 13:01
Hello,
as an old Amiga fan I would like to record my message with the original Amiga text-to-speech software from the Workbench. Will you accept this?
Sebastian

Ron Gilbert - Mar 06, 2016 at 13:35
Yep

Victor - Mar 08, 2016 at 09:01
Hi,
I bought two voicemail pledges, one for me and one for my brother.
He got one email and recorded his message, but I got TWO emails, different links, with different numbers, and I can record two messages.

I think one must be an error (I really think I bought only two, not three...), but I don't know what to do.
So in case one gets removed, and it was the one I didn't expect, I've recorded the same thing in both...

My numbers are 3157 and 5127, and right now they look very similar.  I guess you'll want to delete one?
Or let me know if they both stay, then I'll do something different in one of them.

Sorry for the trouble,
Thanks,
Victor

Ron Gilbert - Mar 08, 2016 at 09:35
Can to contact me using the contract link.

Evan - Mar 09, 2016 at 00:29
Hi,

While I listed my actual name for the phone book perk, I was wondering if it was okay for me to speak a fake name on the voice recording. (The fake name on the recording isn't entirely dissimilar from what I listed as the contact name, as I have "Darkflint" in quotes on the listed name, but ,"You have reached Mark Darkflint's cell phone," as the phone greeting. If it's absolutely necessary for me to use my actual full name in the recording, just let me know and I can rerecord it. ^_^

Best,

Evan

Teemu - Mar 10, 2016 at 06:27
Hi,

I posted this somewhere above earlier but I guess it got lost somewhere in the noise. I pledged both kickstarter and humblebundle but only received one link so far, I guess for kickstarter. Haven't done anything with it so far as I wanted to wait for the kids to do both at the same time. Did you process the humblebundles yet or is there some issue with my info?

Thanks,

Johnny Walker - Mar 19, 2016 at 19:49
Ron, how is this going to work in game? Is there an in-game reason why 99% of the people in Thimbleweed Park are away from their phone? Or can I make reference to that fact? Thanks.

Johnny Walker - Mar 20, 2016 at 22:57
Sob, you didn't answer my question. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Here's an example of what I mean:

"Hi there, sorry I can't come to the phone, but like just about everyone else in Thimbleweed Park I'm out living life to the fullest... not stuck indoors playing a videogame or anything boring like that. Leave a message and I might get back to you when I'm not doing something exciting."

Ron Gilbert - Mar 21, 2016 at 10:10
There is no story reason that everyone is away from their phones, so you are free to make one up for yourself.

Johnny W - Mar 25, 2016 at 04:33
Thank you!

Lukas Daniel Klausner - Mar 20, 2016 at 05:32
Does it *have* to be speech? I think I've got a funny idea involving the sounds electronics components make, but I'm unsure whether that's acceptable.

Ron Gilbert - Mar 20, 2016 at 11:20
It's doesn't have to be speech. It can be funny noises, as long as it's not music, becasue the music industry are jerks.

Lukas Daniel Klausner - Mar 20, 2016 at 13:07
Wonderful, then I should be in the clear. Thx!

Steffen - Mar 25, 2016 at 19:42
Hello Ron, Gary & Co.
I would like to use the two (first) names of my daughters. Do you accept double names like "Anna & Bella" instead of first name AND family name?
BTW: I really like your weblog - its great to see how game development works and how this game develops! Many thanks.

Soren - Mar 27, 2016 at 10:01
I have submitted Giberish.... is that okay, since it is not in either german, english, spanish or italian?

I just could not come up with anything funny or meaningful to say in my voicemail. I didnt like to hear my own voice in english (nor in my native language).

Is that okay? Or should I change it to some english stuff?

Orcan Ogetbil - Apr 02, 2016 at 15:10
Finally got around to record by acapella-ish message. It's just my voice, I hope it's acceptable.

Nick Morgan - Apr 03, 2016 at 01:19
I upgraded my pledge in 4th March to the phone booth recording, but I haven't received any links to upload my recording, will I be receiving this before 1st May? Thanks.

Nor Treblig - Apr 03, 2016 at 09:51
Try to email support @ terribletoybox . com providing necessary details to find your pledge etc.

Luca Auza - Apr 03, 2016 at 13:40
Hi, i'd like to record the voicemail withy brother, so can we put both our names in the phonebook? Like "Luca & Marco Auza"

The Thing! - Apr 06, 2016 at 03:25
Considering that families in 1987 mostly had one phone for the whole familiy (or at least in the country I grew up in), then it should be allowed. And since one is allowed to put nicknames and pet-names into this, then I would say it realistic that you could and should do it.
But in the post above you there is a link or email adress for support in this manner.

Also I hope the dev-team will make a blog post or pod cast going into detail about this before April ends.

Mattias Cedervall - Apr 04, 2016 at 17:00
Will we be able to call the Thimbleweed Park-team? :-) It would then be extra nice if Ron for example say that he's at Gary's place and ask the player to call there instead. :-)

The Thing! - Apr 06, 2016 at 03:21
That could actually be fun. Just like when you could call the lucasarts hotline in Monkey2.

Maybe you should try and write this a couple of places during blog posts, so that the dev-team will see it. Because I would love to see this joke in the game.

Nor Treblig - Apr 06, 2016 at 23:44
And since they cannot answer the phone right now the message could explain what they are currently doing... and also what they did last week and how's the weather like... :-)

Intendant S - Apr 09, 2016 at 17:30
I just submitted my voice mail but want to make sure that I didn't violate any of the guidelines listed. Is something like this appropriate? If not then I'll re-record something.

"You have reached Serena's Noodle Whip Emporium. We are sorry but Serena Nelson herself is unavailable as she is currently with a client. Please leave your name and favorite type of pasta. We try to meet all the needs of our noodle clientele. Hard or soft your pleasure is our business."

Nor Treblig - Apr 15, 2016 at 00:40
Sounds perfectly fine to me :-)
Well, except if there's already a Noodle Whip Emporium integrated into the current story line, probably located next to the pillow factory... then you'll have to change your message to stop interfering with the plot!

Astrozombie - Apr 14, 2016 at 09:07
Having just checked the Thimbleweed Park Phonebook Information page, it now says we can edit it until the 1 July, 2016. Has there been any confirmation on this? I don't want to end up thinking I have longer than I do and then missing out if it's incorrect. Thanks.

Ron Gilbert - Apr 14, 2016 at 09:33
Yes, we did move the date out.

Ipek - Apr 18, 2016 at 09:32
Hi,

I just registered a voicemail, but just to be sure… Could we use some jokes from Monkey Island (like three headed monkey, inserting disks etc.) or these jokes are copyrighted? :)

Thanks!
Ipek

Ron Gilbert - Apr 18, 2016 at 09:35
If they are jokes and not disparaging or insulting to the game, then they are OK.

Thomas - Apr 18, 2016 at 13:15
Hi

I have some questions regarding the voicemail.

In the phonebook I have my whole name, is it ok to use my initials in the voicemail to short the message down, like you have called mr T*?, otherwise the messeage will be to long.

Is it ok if I saying Maniac Mansion and C64 somewhere in the message or is that to much of "The recording can not include copyrighted material of any kind" thing?

Ron Gilbert - Apr 18, 2016 at 13:17
Those are both fine, as long as they are not being used in a negative way.

Dirk - Apr 24, 2016 at 15:08
When re-submitting a recording, I realized that the sound player doesn't play the update; it only plays the first file that I uploaded. The file I can download seems to be the correct one, though. Apparently, both files are still kept somewhere, so I am worried the "wrong" one might be actually selected. I also tried this after explicitly deleting the recording, no difference.

Does anyone else have experience this?

Leak - May 01, 2016 at 04:59
Same here - I was kinda freaked out until I tried downloading the recording, so I guess it at least made it to the server, but for peace of mind of everyone involved I hope this gets fixed... :)

G - Apr 24, 2016 at 21:10
Guys, I've recorded my voicemail message in Ukrainian.
Ukrainian is not in the list, is it all right?
Please let me know.
(I've provided the translation and original text, just wanna make sure that it's gonna be included in the game)

Wayne Pozzi - Apr 30, 2016 at 02:27
Finally managed to record a message using my iphone, but when it uploads (it says it's .m4a) but only silence is heard. It can't play on anything it seems except itunes. Can anyone offer any thoughts on this please?

Ron Gilbert - Apr 30, 2016 at 09:15
The issue is your browser can't play back .m4a files.  Under Chrome on a Mac, I can hear your voice mail.

Wayne Pozzi - May 14, 2016 at 19:53
Thank you. It does actually play for me now though. I'm presuming a thing must have happened. Thank you again for the reply though.

Markus - May 01, 2016 at 11:12
Is 1. July still the final date for name entry / recording (as mention in a question above)?

Would also like to ask if it is ok to start the recording with a singing a short phrase in norwegian (will of course supply translation),
and then having the rest of the recording in english.

Cheerio.

Ron Gilbert - May 01, 2016 at 11:33
Yes, July 1 is the new final date. It's best not to sing because we have no way of know if it's violating copy musical copyright. Music copyright is completely screwed up and the music industry are complete and total jerks. We have no way of knowing if we what someone is singing is copyrighted or not and if it is, they can get the game pulled, it particularly bad that that game footage can go on YouTube and that process is completely automated. Your song seems like it's pretty safe, but it then opens the floodgates and it's easier if we just have a "no music" policy. The music industry is full of complete shithead.

David - May 01, 2016 at 15:29
I have entered every necessary information and ticked every box on my personal link (fyi: page title = Thimbleweed Park Phonebook Information).

Is there something like a final submit button or is it already sufficient that every box is ticked and the name + soundfile submitted?
It would be a shame if I missed my chance of being part of the telephone book just because there was something like a final submit button that I didn't see :)

thank you and best wishes!

Jonathan Gibson - May 03, 2016 at 19:56
My message was recorded in the shower for humorous effect and has an audible shower noise in the background. Is that ok?

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Jun 10, 2016 at 18:01
Hello,
I want to update only the audio file of my phonebook entry.
From my page, I browse the new file (.mp3), and push the "Submit recording" button.
It works, apparently.
When I Play on the little player below, I hear the old file.
I don't want to delete everything (including texts!) just update my voice file.
Is it possible?

Ron Gilbert - Jun 10, 2016 at 18:02
My guess is your browser is caching it since it will have the same name.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Jun 10, 2016 at 18:07
UPDATE: it doesn't seem to work, EVEN IF I delete everything and start over.
I tried to change the filename, but it keeps the old one, always!

Ron Gilbert - Jun 10, 2016 at 18:09
Contact me via email or the contact link.

Zak Phoenix McKracken - Jun 10, 2016 at 18:09
Ron, you are right.
I opened Chrome instead of Firefox, and it works.
Sorry

Rob "goes to eleven" Freeman - Jun 19, 2016 at 08:53
Two quick questions:

Is there a way to know if a submission was approved?  I included a little guitar ditty at the end of mine and then noticed the no music ban.  I would happily resubmit an updated version if not approved.

I ran my submission through 1987 software filters (creative license) to make it sound like a phone call.  Is this something you are going to do globally?  If so i'll have to undo and resubmit because it would just sound silly.

Ron Gilbert - Jun 19, 2016 at 09:09
Unfortunately, there can be no music because the music industry are a bunch of dicks and sue everyone.  Also, no processing, I will do that to all the messages.

Rob "goes to eleven" Freeman - Jun 22, 2016 at 10:45
Thanks Ron, i'll update and upload a new version.  Thanks music dicks!  (had to say it, feels good).

Lluís - Jun 21, 2016 at 09:17
I wanted to ask, How do you know if the recording is accepted? If not, Can you repeat? Thank you.

Markus - Jun 29, 2016 at 21:54
Greetings, since we are one day away from the end of this campaign now I wanted to ask:

If our recording for some reason does not get approved, will we get informed about this and
have at least a day or two to submit a new recording?

Ron Gilbert - Jun 30, 2016 at 03:30
Yes, it will take us a bit to go though all the recordings. If there is a problem, we will contact you.

Nicole - Jun 30, 2016 at 16:48
I submitted the wrong MP3 file to the Voicemail... is there any way to replace the wrong file with the right file?

Astrozombie - Jun 30, 2016 at 18:55
If you scroll to the bottom of the Thimbleweed Park Phonebook Information page, where you originally submitted your recording, there's an option to delete it. I imagine you could then simply submit the correct file afterwards.

Christian - Jun 30, 2016 at 18:07
You will adjust the volume, won't you? I read that no filtering shall be done by us, but I also did not modify the volume of my recording un Audacity, okay? Also will you trim silence?

Astrozombie - Jun 30, 2016 at 19:01
Ron replied to a comment earlier about if there's a problem with your voicemail, then they will contact you, so I wouldn't worry at the moment. I think the important thing is to get your voicemail submitted, and so long as you have followed the guidelines as shown on the information page, you should be ok. I'm more worried about sounding like an idiot in my voicemail, which I'm positive I do. I'm not going to be able to pursue a voice-acting career, that's for sure.

Tman - Jul 03, 2016 at 15:56
I'm a few days late, can I still submit something? The form is still available, will you keep what I submit today or tomorrow?

Peter Pawinski - Jul 04, 2016 at 12:39
Me, too. I couldn't get my submission in time. I know, you snooze you lose, but just in case you can make a couple of exceptions, I do finally have a recording I'd like to submit.

Tman - Jul 04, 2016 at 13:08
You CAN submit, I just don't know if it will still be considered. That's what I did.

Ron Gilbert - Jul 04, 2016 at 13:13
Not anymore. I have locked down the submissions. I would have done this on the 1st, but I was in Spain.

Tman - Jul 04, 2016 at 14:26
OK, but will all submissions done before the lockdown be considered? Or only those done before July 1st.

Ron Gilbert - Jul 04, 2016 at 14:32
Anything before the lockdown are good.

Peter Pawinski - Jul 04, 2016 at 23:50
Darn it. Looks like I just missed it. Sure an extra fifty to the Kickstarter fund wouldn't change your mind? ;)

Peter Pawinski - Jul 04, 2016 at 23:53
Actually, nevermind. It seems like it took...I think. At least my uploaded message and audio shows up on the Phonebook page. Fingers crossed.

mehowte - Jul 19, 2016 at 14:44
If I claimed a phone number with my name but didn't upload any message, will I still get a generic one or is the phone number going to be ignored?

Nor Treblig - Jul 19, 2016 at 18:53
If you entered your name you will be in the phone book!

Here is an example how it could look like: https://blog.thimbleweedpark.com/voicemail_contest
The black ones have messages. I would assume when calling the other ones the phone will just ring and no one answers.
